Dear Parents,

The call to service is at the heart of our Catholic traditions.  Through the studies of Catholic Social teachings this is one way our students learn to live a life based on service.  This week several of our 6th grade students made an appointment with me to "pitch" a service project which was inspired by their study of the book Because of Anya Our young students put together a very impressive Google slide  presentation, designed flyers and presented their research. Most importantly they were able to talk about the importance of taking action and finding ways to help other people.  This is just one example of how we are blessed to have so many fine young people in our school community willing to demonstrate kindness by serving others.

If your family is looking for a service project that you can do together please check out the story below about the Meals on Wheels program.  Several of our families volunteer with the LifeCare Alliance program and have brought forth the need for more volunteers. This is a great family opportunity and if you would like more information there will be a meeting on April 30th at 10:00 am in Hendricks Hall.

Planning ahead for the 2018-19 school year, I have several staff announcements to make at this time.  We have two staff members who will be retiring this year. We sincerely thank Mrs. Maureen DiDomenico, our Preschool Director, for her 25 years of service as an educator, 15 of them at St. Brigid.  We are also grateful to Mrs. Cindy Sovik for her 20 years working in the office serving the children and families of St. Brigid. We wish Mrs. Michele Sapp, kindergarten, and Mrs. Holly Boroff, Director of Student Learning, joy and happiness as they depart from St. Brigid and enter the next phase of their life's journey.  We welcome back Mrs. Jill Carfagna, who will be returning to her role as Director of Student Learning, and we also welcome back Mrs. Sara Hardin to the middle school team from her one-year family leave.

Easter Blessings,
Kathy O'Reilly

Scholarship Day
Seventh Grade Scholarship Day is May 11

In an effort to celebrate the seventh grade students of Saint Brigid of Kildare as the next leaders of our school, the Home and School Association is pleased to announce this year's "Middle School Scholarship" open to all seventh grade students regardless of financial need or academic merit. Two (2) scholarships valued at $500 each will be awarded on June 1st at the 9:00 AM Leadership Mass. The scholarships will be applied to Saint Brigid tuition for the 2018-2019 school year. This year's scholarship competition will take place on Friday, May 11th.

Our Home and School Association is the parent run volunteer organization dedicated to supporting the mission statement of Saint Brigid of Kildare School thereby enriching the Catholic school experience for students and expressing appreciation to those committed to our school. In an effort to give back to the students, this scholarship will be awarded to two individuals who demonstrate that they embody the mission statement and represent all that Saint Brigid has given to them to become the Catholic individuals they are today as they are poised to take on the role as leaders of the school.

Students may compete either by writing an essay or by completing an interview with a panel of adults. Students will meet with Mrs. Lombardo on Friday April 20th to discuss the details of the competition and how they can prepare for "Scholarship Day." In their April 20th Friday Folders, they will receive materials about the scholarship competition to share with parents. The requirements of the program are as follows:

Requirements:
  1. Complete and submit "Application and Declaration Form" by May 1, 2018 to the school office, attention Mrs. Lombardo.
  2. Complete a written essay (1 ½ pages and up to 5 paragraphs within 90 minutes) or an oral interview (5 -10 minutes) on "Scholarship Day," Friday, May 11, 2018.
  3. Submit two reference forms on "Scholarship Day."
  4. Bring the assigned PIN number to "Scholarship Day" to include on the essay or to give to the interview panel.
It is the sincere desire of the Home and School Association that this is a rewarding experience for our seventh graders and that they learn how truly special we believe they are in the role of leaders of Saint Brigid of Kildare School.

Meals on Wheels Volunteer Opportunity

There is a strong need to provide and deliver meals for the elderly in Columbus.  You and your family have the chance to partner with LifeCare Alliance's Meals on Wheels program to help keep our aging neighbors in their homes, where they want to be.  Our students will see the good they are doing in their community by handing over a hot meal to someone in need, while spending some quality time with their family.

We are looking for families to volunteer together on weekends during the school year, and during the week during the summer.  Meals would  be picked up at 10:30am at LifeCare Alliance, 670 Harmon Ave. and delivered in neighborhoods throughout the city.  Each route takes between 1 - 2 hours to complete.

We will have an informational meeting and training session on Monday, April 30 at 10:00 am in Hendricks Hall.  In the meantime, if you have questions, please call Nancy Davis at 336-337-4421.
