In This Issue

Dear Parents,

Thank you for participating in the family read aloud of Wonder.  We hope that you found it of value to your family in terms of providing time for your family to be together and also time for your family to discuss ideas such as kindness and respect, and specifically how we interact with and treat others.  As we continue on our discipleship journey, we are emphasizing these ideas at school and hope that they are continuing to carry over into the community.

If you are looking to continue on your reading journey as a family, there are two new Wonder stores, Pluto and Shingaling. Pluto has been released and is a story told from Christopher's perspective, and Shingaling will be released on May 12th and is told from Charlotte's perspective.  Also, Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper and Rules by Cynthia Lord are two other books with similar themes and would be good family reads.

We hope that you enjoyed Wonder, and we hope that this novel helped you, as a family, on your journey as disciples.

Sincerely,

Kathleen O'Reilly

Principal

Ruthie Walling Selected as 2015 Kinder Key Heart Warrior
Ruthie Walling, kindergartner at Saint Brigid of Kildare, has been selected as the 2015 Kinder Key Heart Warrior.

Kinder Key serves as an auxiliary of Nationwide Children's Hospital and is dedicated to supporting the lifesaving work at The Heart Center. This group has raised more than $3 million for Nationwide Children's and its mission to provide the highest quality health care to all children, regardless of their ability to pay. Today, active members are working to continue the Kinder Key legacy of providing "new hope for young hearts" through a variety of fund-raising efforts such as the traditional holiday Caroling for a Cause caroling drive, the sale of holiday angels, Candles for a Cause, the Women's Division of The Memorial Tournament and the tenth-annual Denim & Diamonds Gala.

Ruthie will be honored at this year's Denim & Diamonds Gala, taking place on Saturday, April 25 from 7 p.m. to midnight at The Venue at Corazon. The Denim & Diamonds Gala features heavy hors d'oeuvres, delicious cocktails, an evening of dancing and entertainment in the Kinder Key Casino, as well as honoring one special child each year as Kinder Key's 2015 Heart Warrior. New Family Mentors Needed

Home and School is currently looking for parents to sign up to be on the New Family Welcome committee. This entails being a mentor to a new family for the next school year. Mentor families will attend the new family welcome reception at the beginning of the school year and also need to be available to check in with their new family monthly and be available to answer any questions and assist with their transition. There will be a short mentor meeting in the summer to go over the duties.

Mentors will be paired up with new families with children in the same grades.

Summer Solutions Math Workbook

Our SPICE funds will be purchasing Summer Solutions math workbooks for grades K - 7 again this year. SPICE is sponsoring this program to help ALL students avoid summer learning loss by maintaining consistent math practice and skill work throughout the summer break.  Research shows that regular practice helps students come back to school confident and ready to learn.  Confident students ready to learn is one of the year long goals for the use of our SPICE funds. We'll send home more details and instructions when we send the books home closer to the end of the school year.

Incoming 8th Grade Scholarship Information

In an effort to celebrate the seventh grade students of Saint Brigid of Kildare as the next leaders of our school, the Home and School Association is pleased to announce this year's "Middle School Scholarship" open to all seventh grade students regardless of financial need or academic merit.  Two (2) scholarships valued at $500 each will be awarded on June 2nd at the 9:00 AM Leadership Mass.  The scholarships will be applied to Saint Brigid tuition for the 2015-2016 school year.  This year's scholarship competition will take place on Friday, May 15th.

Our Home and School Association is the parent run volunteer organization dedicated to supporting the mission statement of Saint Brigid of Kildare School thereby enriching the Catholic school experience for students and expressing appreciation to those committed to our school.  In an effort to give back to the students, this scholarship will be awarded to two individuals who demonstrate that they embody the mission statement and represent all that Saint Brigid has given to them to become the Catholic individuals they are today as they are poised to take on the role as leaders of the school.

Students may compete either by writing an essay or by completing an interview with a panel of adults.  On Friday, students will meet with Mrs. Lombardo to discuss the details of the competition and how they are to prepare for "Scholarship Day."  In their Friday Folders this week, they will receive materials about the scholarship competition to share with parents. The requirements of the program are as follows:

Requirements:

  1. Complete and submit "Application and Declaration Form" by Friday, May 1, 2015 to the school office attention Mrs. Lombardo.
  2. Complete an essay question in either written format (1 ? pages and up to 5 paragraphs within 90 minutes) or in oral format (5 -10 minute interview) on "Scholarship Day", Friday, May 15, 2014.
  3. Submit two reference forms on "Scholarship Day."
  4. Bring the assigned PSN number to "Scholarship Day" to include on the essay or to give to the interviewer.

It is the sincere desire of Home and School Association that this is a rewarding experience for our seventh graders and that they learn how truly special we believe they are in the role of leaders of Saint Brigid of Kildare School.

Taking Back Dinner Time From Technology

Below is an article from Grace Before Meals on the importance of taking back dinner time from technology. A few interesting stats from the article:

  • Teens who had frequent family dinners (5 to 7 per week) were more likely to report having high-quality relationships with their parents.
  • In one study, American kindergartners who watched TV during dinner were more likely to be overweight by the time they were in third grade. The association between TV-watching during dinner and overweightness in children was also reported in Sweden, Finland and Portugal.

SPiCE committee members want to hear from you about your interest in a summer fitness program geared toward K-5 students and their families.

Please give us your input using this short SURVEY  so we can plan the program with sensitivity toward your student's needs.
