Dear Parents,

Today is our very last CARE meeting for the year. Our students will be learning  about the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Also known as America's Catholic Church, it is located in Washington, DC. Many people have visited the basilica including Saint Mother Teresa, Pope Francis and Saint Pope John Paul II. Clearly, this is a very special place. Today the students will hear from their 8th grade leader about a beautiful mosaic that is being created for a dome of the basilica. This mosaic will depict the Most Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception and many saints who have an association with the United States or the basilica.

If you would like to watch the video that students viewed today it can be found at this link.

The students will have a chance to make their own mosaic trinity knot and then they will have an opportunity they all enjoy - lunch and recess with their CARE family.

Tomorrow evening is our Showcase of Learning.  We have a great open house planned from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.  Our author will be visiting and signing books, our honor choir will be singing, student wax museum characters will be sharing their stories, sphero robot shows, PE activities, science demonstrations, gardens tours and a blessing and so much more!!!  I look forward to seeing everyone and keep in mind there is no homework!

In closing, I would like to draw particular attention to today's Crucial Conversations article.  I have recently learned and I am concerned that several of our 5th - 8th grade students are watching and discussing the new Netflix show "13 Reasons Why".  Please read the article below and/or also read more about the show at this link.

Blessings,

Kathy O'Reilly

Warning about popular Netflix series
"13 Reasons Why"

Netflix's series "13 Reasons Why" has been widely popular with teens, but mental health experts fear the show could glorify teen suicide for those on the edge.

The show, released in full on March 31, tells the story of a teenager's suicide through audio tapes listened to by a classmate. Each tape details why Hannah blames specific people for her suicide.

That, along with a myriad of other issues - including a disturbing scene graphically showing Hannah's suicide - has mental health experts saying the series could be more harmful than helpful.

The show is rated for ages 16 and older, but we would caution against any teens viewing it, due to the heavy subject matter.

If you have resources you'd like to share with other parents, please email them to Allie Wing at [email protected].

Gifts of Gratitude Provides Teacher & Staff Christmas & Year End Appreciation Gifts
There's still time to donate for year-end gifts, donations are due May 12

Gifts  of  Gratitude  is Home and School Association's united effort to provide a generous monetary  gift  to every school and parish teacher and staff member at Christmas and the end of the year to thank them for all they do for our children.

When and how much do I give?
Families are asked to participate once each school year with a suggested annual gift amount of $25 per child (however any amount is graciously accepted!)

Did I give already?
Thank you to those who have already participated for the 2016-17 school year! Not sure if you did? No worries -- contact Kate Giha at [email protected] and she can let you know.

Will my family be recognized for participating?
Yes -- the teachers and staff will receive a list of families who participate in this program.  You may also let the teachers and staff know that you participated in the program by marking "G.O.G" inside any card you give them.

How to participate:
  • PayPal:  Log onto www.paypal.com, choose "send money to friends and family", enter the email address [email protected] along with the total amount of your contribution, and complete the transaction.
  • Check: Send to school with your child, payable to "St Brigid Home and School," in an envelope marked "Home and School Gifts of Gratitude".

New Preschool Class Offerings for 2017-18

We're excited to let you know about some new class offerings in our preschool! In response to growing demand for longer class times and additional class offerings, we have restructured and expanded our class schedule for the 2017-18 school year.  Also new this year, we are excited to offer "Wolfhound Adventures" -- optional learning activities parents can sign up for on an individual basis (this schedule and registration will be available in August). Another benefit of our new program is that restructuring our class schedule has allowed us to restructure our tuition schedule.

If you have younger children at home considering preschool, or friends or family considering preschool, take a look at our new offerings. If you would like more information or would like to set up a tour, contact preschool director Maureen DiDomenico at  mrs.didomenico@stbrigid-school.org or  (614) 718-5825.

Wellness Week to Focus on Breakfast Next Week
May 1 - 5

Wellness Week gives us a chance to celebrate and promote the many faces of Wellness with our students and families. As a school community, we realize the importance of breakfast for students. With busy mornings at home as well as students who like to stay in bed as long as possible, breakfast is often missed!

Here is our plan: Offer a la' carte style breakfast/snack foods for sale from 7:45 - 8:05. Choices will be: apples, bananas, grapes, dry cereal (Crispix, Apple Jacks, Frosted Mini Wheats, Cinnamon Chex), and colby-jack cheese sticks. These foods could be eaten before 8:15... or, saved for snack time. We will trial this cart May 1 - 5. Parents should discuss this trial with their children. The cost of each item will be $.25 - $.50 and will be deducted from their lunch account. Students will be limited to a max of 2 items per day. Parents and students will be surveyed following the trial week!

Author Visit for Grades 5-8
April 28

Nancy Roe Pimm is an award-winning author of nonfiction books for young readers. On April 28th Ms. Pimm will be teaching the St.Brigid students in grades 5-8 about her writing process. She will also be working with the students on writing their own work of non-fiction.

Nancy Roe Pimm's life-long love of animals compelled her to write her latest book, Bonded by Battle: The Powerful Friendships of Military Dogs and Soldiers from the Civil War to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Pimm observed military war dogs as they trained through obstacle courses and bomb-sniffing drills. These four-legged soldiers are sometimes heroic, and sometimes supportive, but always full of courage, loyalty, intelligence, and a whole lot of heart.

All Nancy Roe Pimm's books are available to order before the visit. Any pre-ordered books will be *signed* by the author!
