Keep the conversation going is weekly feature designed to keep up the dialogue that began with Dr. Sax's presentation on The Collapse of Parenting. We'll share resources to help guide parents in today's socially and technologically complicated world.

My son plays video games all day. Should I worry?

My son is 16-years-old. He is a straight-A student, got good SAT scores, is on the varsity golf team, and participates in business clubs at high school. He makes money by mowing neighbors' lawns. He does not get in trouble, does not party, does not do drugs. He's a good kid. However, he spends most of his waking hours locked away in his bedroom  playing video games .

If you have resources you'd like to share with other parents, please email them to Allie Wing at [email protected].

Seventh Grade Scholarship Day
Four Scholarships Available

In an effort to celebrate the seventh grade students of Saint Brigid of Kildare as the next leaders of our school, the Home and School Association and Athletic Association are pleased to announce this year's "Middle School Scholarship" open to all seventh grade students regardless of financial need or academic merit.  Four (4) scholarships valued at $500 each will be awarded on June 1st at the 9:00 AM Leadership Mass.  The scholarships will be applied to Saint Brigid tuition for the 2017-2018 school year.  This year's scholarship competition will take place on Friday, May 12th.

In an effort to give back to the students, this scholarship will be awarded to four individuals who demonstrate that they embody the mission statement and represent all that Saint Brigid has given to them to become the Catholic individuals they are today as they are poised to take on the role as leaders of the school.

Students may compete either by writing an essay or by completing an interview with a panel of adults.  Students will meet with Mrs. Lombardo on Friday April 7th to discuss the details of the competition and how they can prepare for "Scholarship Day."  In their April 7th Friday Folders, they will receive materials about the scholarship competition to share with parents. The requirements of the program are as follows:

Requirements:
  1. Complete and submit "Application and Declaration Form" by Monday, May 1, 2017 to the school office attention Mrs. Lombardo.
  2. Complete a written essay (1 ½ pages and up to 5 paragraphs within 90 minutes) or an oral interview (5 -10 minutes) on "Scholarship Day", Friday, May 12, 2017.
  3. Submit two reference forms on "Scholarship Day."
  4. Bring the assigned PIN number to "Scholarship Day" to include on the essay or to give to the interviewer.
It is the sincere desire of Home and School Association and the Athletic Association that this is a rewarding experience for our seventh graders and that they learn how truly special we believe they are in the role of leaders of Saint Brigid of Kildare School.

Author Visit & Books for Sale
May 3

On Wednesday, May 3, author Dr. John Beckner will visit grades K-4 at St. Brigid of Kildare of School. Dr. Becker will talk about the twenty-six books he has written for children, read from his books, share video from his field research experiences, and sign copies of his books. He will discuss the writing process and tell stories based on his adventures, such as how he came to write Mugambi's Journey after making his first trip to Africa while working at the Columbus Zoo. Dr. Becker will also explain the role his book, Frenemies for Life , plays in the cause of cheetah conservation, as well as answer questions about Mugambi's Journey, Wild Cats Past & Present, Returning Wildlife series, and Seedling books for beginning readers.

Dr. Becker is a graduate of The Ohio State University, a former elementary school teacher, college professor at the University of Florida, and administrator at the Columbus Zoo. He has also worked for many years in the field of wildlife conservation, so it is of no surprise that wild animals are the central theme of his books. Dr. Becker is a full-time author living in Delaware, Ohio. Dr. Becker also teaches writing at the Thurber Writing Academy in Columbus, Ohio. More information about Dr. Becker and his books may be obtained from www.johnbeckerauthor.com.

Algebra Testing Notice

Saint Brigid of Kildare School has for many years offered algebra one for qualified eighth graders.  In the last year, the Office of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Columbus has reviewed and restructured the process by which seventh grade students will qualify to take algebra one during their eighth grade year.

The first step for our students involves the mathematics score on the seventh grade Terra Nova tests taken in October 2016.  Students to be considered for algebra one must have scored in the top ten national percentiles on this mathematics test.

The second test involves an additional standardized test.  Students with a qualifying Terra Nova score will take the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test  here at school. This test will be provided to us by the Office of Catholic Schools and will be scored by the Office of Catholic Schools.

Subsequent to this test, the Office of Catholic Schools will let us know which of our students have qualified for algebra one in the eighth grade year.  At that point, we will notify our parents with the Office of Catholic Schools' decision.

Parents of students who have met the diocesan qualifications to take the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test will receive a letter in this week's Friday Folder with additional details.
