Thank you for your support of our Catholic Schools Week events. It was wonderful to have so many people join us for our Mass for the Feast of St. Brigid, the 8th grade vs. Watterson basketball game, and Pizza Bingo! All of these great traditions make our community a special place for families to grow in faith and build strong lifelong relationships.
Next week the liturgical season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. The students will be attending Mass on Wednesday, February 14th at 9:00 am and there will not be a school Mass on Thursday. Please look this week in the Friday folder of your youngest/only child for a packet of materials for your family to use during Lent. I will have more details about using the materials next week in the Wolfhound Wednesday. In the meantime, place the materials in a safe place.
Also, please note that since Valentine's Day is on Ash Wednesday, students may bring Valentine cards for classmates on Tuesday, February 13th, when we will have a combination Mardi Gras and Valentine's Day simple celebration. We will not have formal parties due to the fact that we just celebrated the Feast of St. Brigid with classroom parties.
Blessings,
Kathy O'Reilly

Catholic Schools Week CARE Meeting
Last week we held a CARE meeting on the last day of Catholic Schools Week. We began the meetings by discussing the life of Saint Brigid and how we celebrated her feast day. We then reflected on Catholic Schools Week and why we love our Catholic school.
We then learned about five more special saints who are honored in the Trinity Dome. Students learned about St. Luke the Evangelist, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Josephine Bakhita, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, and St. Gabriel the archangel, as well as the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.
After discussing these special saints, we moved onto a rock painting service project for our SPiCE fundraiser, Corks for a Cause. Each student wrote a positive word or phrase that is important to them on a rock. These rocks will be displayed at the fundraiser on March 3.
Finally, each CARE group spent time at the mosaic building station. The students worked together to put paper mosaic pieces on a large mosaic illustrating each of the five saints they learned about during the meeting as well as one mosaic of the Holy Spirit. By the end of the year, our CARE families will have created 24 large mosaics featuring the Holy Trinity and most of the saints who are now honored in the national basilica's Trinity Dome.

Our SPiCE Story: The Owens Family
From Tracy and Jeanne Owens:
We have lived in Dublin for nearly ten years, moving from Philadelphia in early 2007. Henry was 5; he's now 14 and a freshman at Bishop Watterson High School. Evie was 3; she's now in 7th grade at St. Brigid of Kildare School. And Eliot was a newborn baby.
Two years later Eliot was diagnosed with autism. In addition to the physical and mental difficulties that his condition was expected to cause, we were very worried about his emotional and spiritual well being.
Before starting kindergarten, we met several times with the staff at St. Brigid School. We were very comfortable with the conditions and we were assured that children with special needs are welcome in an inclusive classroom so, together with the teaching team, we built a plan for Eliot's success.
We have now served as Chairs of the SPiCE program at St. Brigid of Kildare Parish for three years. The SPiCE program at St. Brigid is more than just a way of thinking. It is a concerted effort to bring strong awareness of conditions that require support, and to provide the necessary tools and skills for teachers to reach students who learn in non-traditional ways, and to keep students in the classroom with their peers and not out in a separate room. SPiCE is making a tremendous difference in Eliot's life because he is learning his schoolwork, advancing his faith formation, and learning to make friends.
SPiCE has been helpful for Henry and Evie and other students, too. Understanding special needs gives kids a strong foundation in empathy, serving others, early leadership skills, and expanding what it means to be a friend.
