In This Issue

Dear Parents,

Our May crowning Mass will take place on  Thursday, May 14th at the  9:00 Mass.  Please join us in prayer as our 2nd and 8th grade classes lead the school in our wonderful tradition of honoring Mary during the month of May.

Yesterday we had our final school safety drill for the year.  Our new model of training the students for intruders or other dangerous situations has been very successful.  The students have responded well and have learned to think and problem solve using available information with making decisions about evacuating and/or barricading in a classroom.  This training has allowed students to develop some great life skills about decision making in stressful situations.  Please continue to talk with your children about school safety.

Next week we will be participating in our Wolfhound Field Day sponsored by our Annual Fund.  Information and an opt out permission slip will be sent home digitally  on Friday.

Sincerely,

Kathleen O'Reilly

Principal

5 Finalists in Letters About Literature Contest

Anne-Marie Arnold, Ellie Hanson, Rachel Hare, Bryndley Pitman, and Caitlin Spyra, sixth grade students from Saint Brigid of Kildare School, were chosen as state finalists in the national Letters About Literature writing contest. These students were part of the 165 students chosen from the 1,784 submitted letters that advanced after being judged at the national level by the Library of Congress staff in Washington, D.C.

One student, Rachel Hare, was named a state honorable finalist, finishing in the top seven from the 1,784 letters submitted in Ohio.  All honorable finalists were invited to an awards ceremony and luncheon in their honor at the Cleveland Public Library on May 2, 2015. Rachel, her family, and her English Language Arts teacher Jill Cecutti attended the reception where Rachel received a certificate and prizes for her honorable mention semifinalist letter. Rachel's letter, written to Tony Abbott, author of Firegirl, was printed in the Letters About Literature semifinalist book, given to all at the ceremony.

The national writing contest is open to students in grades four through twelve in all fifty states. Students from public, private and charter schools enter the contest, with thousands of entries and participation from each state in the U.S. The annual contest integrates the English Language Arts learning standards with an authentic writing opportunity that allows students to express their personal feelings about a book and its effect on them in the form of a letter to the author. What comes from St. Brigid sixth grade students are interpretive reader responses that delve into their personal experiences, and how reading a book has shaped their larger view of the world, their lives, and their impact on others.
