Dear Parents,

Wolfhound Field Day 2017 takes place tomorrow and theme is sunscreen and hydration since we have recently been blessed hot sunny weather!  Please make sure that you apply sunscreen to your children and pack a water bottle before they leave home in the morning.

The students have really been looking forward to this May tradition which is only possible due to the generosity of our donors to the Annual Fund and to the many volunteers helping out with the event.  We are still in need of volunteers for several classrooms.  Sign up here.  A heartfelt thank you to Francie Grden and Natalie Baur,  our parent chairs,  and to Jill Cecutti and Courtney Kreber, our school staff chairs. Also a special thank you to  Joyce Brown, the cafeteria staff and parent volunteers for serving our delicious Wolfhound picnic lunch.

A few reminders of the schedule this week:
  • Student-led conferences for grades K,1, 2, 5 and 6 will take place this evening
  • Following Wolfhound Field Day will be early release at 1:30 PM!
  • There will NOT be school Mass on Thursday.
  • May Crowning will take place on Friday at 9:00 AM
Blessings,

Kathy O'Reilly

Our Teacher and Author Jennifer Maschari's The Remarkable Journey of Charlie Price selected as Choose to Read Ohio "Floyd's Pick" title

The State Library of Ohio and the Choose to Read Ohio Advisory Board are pleased to announce that The Remarkable Journey of Charlie Price by Saint Brigid of Kildare School teacher and author Jennifer Maschari, has been selected as the second annual Choose to Read Ohio (CTRO) "Floyd's Pick" title, in memory of children's literature expert, advocate, and librarian Floyd Dickman.

Each year, the CTRO Advisory Board will select an outstanding book in Ohio children's literature to be Floyd's Pick. This selection will be in addition to the 20 titles featured in the biennial CTRO booklist. CTRO, a project of the State Library of Ohio, Ohioana Library, and Ohio Center for the Book, encourages public libraries, schools, families, and others to build a community of readers and an appreciation of Ohio authors, illustrators, and literature.

Jennifer Maschari's first published book, The Remarkable Journey of Charlie Price (Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins, 2016) is a novel for middle grade readers about grief, magic, family and friendship (and more). From the publisher's description: "Ever since twelve-year-old Charlie Price's mom died, he feels like his world has been split into two parts. Before included stargazing and Mathletes and Saturday scavenger hunts with his family. After means a dad who's completely checked out, comically bad dinners, and grief group that's anything but helpful. It seems like losing Mom meant losing everything else he loved, too. Just when Charlie thinks things can't get any worse, his sister, Imogen, starts acting erratically -- missing school and making up lies about their mother. But everything changes when one day he follows her down a secret passageway in the middle of her bedroom and sees for himself."

Jennifer Maschari grew up in Cincinnati and now lives in central Ohio. She is also a classroom teacher at Saint Brigid of Kildare School who has taught science and language arts at the middle school level. Her next novel, Things That Surprise You, will be published by Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins in September 2017, and she is working on a third novel.

Visit Jennifer Maschari's website (jenmaschari.com) for more information about The Remarkable Journey of Charlie Price.

Our School Garden is Growing

The student gardeners of St. Brigid of Kildare School are off to the start of a productive growing season. They have already harvested radishes, rhubarb, mint, chives and spring flowers. The carrots, lettuce, spinach and beets are up and close to harvest. This year we acquired a grow light so that tomatoes, peppers and herbs were started as seeds and are ready to be transplanted outside.

Thanks to a generous family, the growing area of the Garden has expanded. We have a new perennial  butterfly garden as well as several new raised beds. If you have not been in the Garden recently please stop by anytime. The Garden is the result of God's blessing and is for pleasure of all the students and families who are part of our community.

Last Chance: What's Your Opinion on the Breakfast Cart?

The Breakfast/Snack Cart was offered to all students K - 8 during the week of May 1 - 5. This Cart was the result of a 2016 survey indicating that 20% of St. Brigid students do not eat breakfast before coming to school. The Cart offerings included: apples, bananas, grapes, cheese sticks, and the following cereals: Kix, Cheerios, Crispix, and Reduced-sugar Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Students were able to purchase a max of 2 items that were charged to their lunch account. Food items were priced from $0.25 - $0.50.

Parents, please take a moment to provide feedback regarding this trial.

Your children will also be surveyed within the next week to gather their thoughts about the Cart. Thank you in advance from the Wellness Committee.
