Dear Parents,
I would like to thank everyone who was able to attend our Showcase of Learning
last week. It was an amazing community event celebrating faith-based learning, creativity, and wellness. Our students are our future and this evening allowed us to witness the excitement of learning and in the words of Eleanor Roosevelt realize that "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."
One of our staff members said it so well in an email sent out the next morning, "Counting my Blessings:
I am so proud to be part of such a great community of educators. Last night was such a wonderful evening on so many levels. To see all of the students, their siblings and parents so engaged was a sight all educators live to see."
As our 20th anniversary year comes to a close, I once again thank everyone who supports our school to make it a faith-filled, child centered community.
With gratitude for our many blessings,
Kathy O'Reilly

Keep the conversation going is weekly feature designed to keep up the dialogue that began with Dr. Sax's presentation on The Collapse of Parenting. We'll share resources to help guide parents in today's socially and technologically complicated world.
What Overparenting is Doing to Our Kids
"We didn't appreciate that by over helping, we underserve a developing human. They have to do it for themselves."
Author and educator Julie Lythcott-Haims, speaks and writes on the phenomenon of helicopter parenting and the dangers of a check-listed childhood. In her recent book, How to Raise an Adult, she makes the case for parents to stop overparenting and defining their children's success via grades and test scores, and instead to focus on providing the oldest idea of all: unconditional love.

CARE Meeting Mosaics
Last week, we held our very last CARE meeting for the year. Students learned about the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Also known as America's Catholic Church, this amazing church is located in Washington, DC. Many well-known people have visited the basilica, including Saint Mother Teresa, Pope Francis and Saint Pope John Paul II. Students learned about the final, beautiful mosaic that is being created for an internal dome at the basilica. This mosaic will depict the Most Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception and patroness of the US, and many saints who have an association with the United States or the basilica. After learning about the basilica and about mosaics, students made their own Trinity Knot mosaics which they got to take home with an information sheet about the basilica.
Next year, students will be learning more about the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and its beautiful Trinity mosaic. This August, the parishes in our diocese will have the opportunity to help support the completion of this mosaic through a special collection at Mass. We hope to help our nation's Catholic church celebrate its 100th birthday by helping to ensure that this final mosaic is completed in time. Our school theme for next year, "Pieces in Christ's Mosaic" will help us to focus on this beautiful imagery all year long.
Monsignor Walter Rossi, Rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, will be Father Mitch Pacwa's special guest on EWTN Live on Wednesday, May 3, at 8 p.m. (ET), on the Eternal Word Television Network.
During the live broadcast, Monsignor Rossi will discuss the monumental effort underway to complete the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception with the mosaic ornamentation of what will be its "crowning jewel" - the Trinity Dome.

An Awesome Author Visit!
Non-Fiction author Nancy Roe Pimm signed copies of her brand new book
Bonded By Battle at the Celebration of Learning last Thursday evening. She returned the following day to talk to grades 5-8 about her writing process and fascinating life story. All middle school students had a chance to share some of their own non-fiction writing with Mrs. Pimm as part of a writing workshop. At lunchtime, Power of the Pen/Pencil students chatted with Mrs. Pimm in the library. Thank you to Nancy Roe Pimm for a fantastic visit to St. Brigid!
