I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord,
the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me,
but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

II Timothy 4:7-8

PACS Families,

I hope that you’ve all had a fantastic Spring Break! This school year has absolutely flown by…and it’s amazing to think that we only have 6 more weeks (4 for Seniors) of school left before the Summer Break!

In light of being on the home stretch of the 2017/2018 school year, I want to encourage us all to finish well. Paul when addressing Timothy in II Timothy 4:6-8 stated, “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing.”

From this passage, there are several points that would be good for us to contemplate both individually and within our families…

  • We are all, as Paul states, in a fight and in a race. Each day is a battle of wills: our own will vs. God’s will for us. This daily battle is fought in our hearts, minds, and souls through each individual decision that we voluntarily make. Each seemingly small decision that we make leads to a great overall life trajectory. That life trajectory is the race that we find ourselves running. In essence, each one of us is either seeking to run the race that God has plotted out for us which will result in running toward Godliness and greater overall surrender to Him, or we are trying to run our own race which will always result in emptiness and dead ends. Here’s the good news for the latter: if you begin tomorrow with an acknowledgement that God has a race for you, that you surrender your will for His will for you and ask that He guide you in the decisions that you will make throughout the day, God will change your trajectory for His glory! Remember life is a fight and a race, but each day is a microcosm of that fight and race.

  • Paul definitively states that he has “fought the good fight and finished the race.” This was by no means Paul’s way of bragging but rather his way of encouraging young Timothy that through God’s strength and provision he had lived a life well worth living. There was great satisfaction and contentment in Paul’s life even as he knew that his life was drawing to an end. As students, teachers, and parents, we know that one of the most Christ-honoring things that we could be about is finishing well. God has blessed each one of us immensely by allowing us to be a part of the PACS family throughout the 2017/2018 school year. With every blessing, there comes a measure of stewardship. Jesus teaches us in Luke 12:48 that because we have been given much, much is required of us. This principle certainly applies to the way we view these last 6 weeks of the school year. It certainly would be a tragedy to start the school year well, but not finish these last 6 weeks well due to a lack of intentionality and focus. Even though the end of the school year is not necessarily a finish line but rather a checkpoint, I believe that it is important for us to all be able to say on the last day of school, we fought the fight and we finished the race.

  • There is a principle of integrity that has proven itself time and time again to be true: We cannot start well what we do not end well. The greatest impact that you can make on your tomorrow is being faithful to your today. The habits that we can so easily slip into over the next 6 weeks will most certainly have an effect on whatever our next chapters may be. How your student finishes 3rd grade will make an impression on how he/she begins 4th grade. How your student finishes 8th grade will influence how he/she begins high school. How your student finishes 12th grade will play a large role in how he/she begins college or enters into the workforce. If we desire for God to bless what He has for each us right around the corner, we need to be faithful to complete what He has directly in front of us.

So, with 6 weeks remaining let’s all (parents, faculty, and students) establish a common a goal: To be able to honestly say, “I finished well.”
