The Offical eNewsletter of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame

Dear Friends, Inductees, Board of Directors, and Supporters:

Eastman StatueAs we arrive at the end of the year, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame is reflecting on our 2010 accomplishments and goals for 2011. January brings about many feelings of excitement for us, and we look at the New Year as a time to prioritize.

We are reaching out to each one of you - supporters, inductees, board members, and friends - to help us reach our 2011 goals and continue our mission to Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, and Promote the Future of women's basketball. Although a walk through the museum will acknowledge this mission, our daily operations run much the same.

To Honor the Past, we have collected numerous artifacts that are priceless reminders of days long gone, but still honored at the WBHOF. When not on display, these artifacts are stored in our museum archives. Our Celebration of the Present includes keeping our building and museum up to date and ever changing, so you, our guest, can walk away with a sense of excitement of the present day achievements. Promoting the Future comes in the form of youth programming, which includes education programs, field trips, Girl Scout events, and other youth initiatives.

As you read through our goals for each of these areas, our hope is that you will read something that touches you personally; something that you want to be a part of. When you find that, we hope you will take a moment to donate and help us continue our mission. Your continued support of the WBHOF and its mission is never over-looked and always appreciated. Thank you in advance for your gift.

Sincerely,

Dana Hart

Preserving the History of Women's Basketball
Honor the Past

As I walk through the Hall of Fame and see the different accomplishments throughout the history of women's basketball, it becomes clear that without pioneers of the game, women's basketball would not be where it is today. Honoring the past of women's basketball is a vital part of our mission and vital to its future. We want to honor all great achievements that have made an impact and to do this it takes time, research, and patience.

In order to preserve as much of the history as possible, we have collected a wide variety of artifacts in our archives collection. Our main goal in honoring the past of women's basketball is to conserve and catalogue our ever-expanding archives. With your donation we will be able to properly maintain the history of the game and ultimately allow us to honor the past of women's basketball. Your donation will help us provide the following:

· Binders with acid free sheet protectors for our photographs

· Binders/boxes to properly store newspaper stories and clippings

· Boxes for all basketballs, shoes, and sport memorabilia

· Wardrobe boxes for uniforms

· Proper storage for large trophies and framed photographs

· Tube containers for all posters

· Create a paid position to research items to accurately maintain the collection, as well as to catalogue artifacts.

· An updated storage system to help with the growth of archives

· Equipment to covert old media to a database which will allow for easier use and access

Celebrate the Present

Celebrating the Present
Celebrate the Present

We have all heard the saying that you don't appreciate something until it is gone. A few years ago, I lost my beloved aunt to a sudden heart attack. She had been perfectly healthy and had enjoyed a fun filled evening with my mom, when on her way home she was suddenly taken from us. I will never forget the phone call or the ten hour drive to my hometown. The hardest part was this was permanent, I would never hear her laugh or see the twinkle in her eyes. You are probably wondering what this has to do with the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.

The WBHOF was dreamed of and created by a group that envisioned something to represent all that have played the game and will play the game in the future. It was built for the past, the present and the future. Daily we work at the WBHOF to maintain and build upon the dream of our founding members. But dreams do not continue without hard work and dedication from staff, board members and donors.

It takes daily upkeep of the building, everything from mopping the floors to changing the lights. The daily maintenance of a 32,000 square foot building is never ending. Occasionally, we are blind-sided by a leak in the roof or a worn out heating unit. This all comes with age along with daily wear and tear. Our goal is to keep the hall in the best shape possible for every guest that walks in the door. We strive to keep the exhibits updated and fresh, so that every time you visit you will see something new.

Just as your home needs yearly repairs, so does the hall. Items that are on our maintenance list for upcoming repairs:

1. Painting the Baden Basketball

2. Replacing the WBHOF street banners

3. Painting and sealing the parking lot

4. Weatherproofing of the rotunda windows

Our work cannot be measured by revenue and expenses. It is measured every day in the love of the game that is being preserved for future generations. We hope you will become part of our team.

Promote the Future

Promoting the Future Through Youth Programming
Promote the Future

The game of women's basketball has continued to grow and emerge over the last hundred years with more women playing, more fans cheering, and more media coverage. Part of our mission is to help continue this growth by instilling in youth the passion and drive that has helped women's basketball succeed. Our hope is that every child that walks through our facility will be inspired to play, cheer for, or contribute to the game in some way.

To reach children the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame offers a variety of programs directly targeted to youth. These programs include birthday parties, team parties, Girl Scout programming, and educational field trips. Through our field trips, students have an opportunity to learn educational concepts using basketball. For example, students learn how to find percentages by shooting field goals and computing their own statistics or can learn units of measurement by finding the heights of different age basketball players. In addition, we place a heavy emphasis on physical education, sportsmanship, and nutrition.

Field trip numbers have dwindled in the last few years due to cuts in education budgets, rising costs in transportation, and stricter guidelines for taking students out of the classroom. For the Hall of Fame, this has meant fewer children visiting us each year and less children learning about women's basketball. Our ultimate goal, with your help, would be to touch each elementary school in our area, each year, through field trips to the Hall or in-school programming.

With your donation, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame could visit the elementary schools unable to afford an outside field trip. Listed below are the specific objectives we would like to accomplish during each in-school visit:

  • Present artifacts and exhibits to explain the past, present and future of women's basketball.
  • Take students through physical education programs, focusing on proper warm-ups, cardiovascular education, and basketball skills.
  • Using the food guide pyramid, teach students the value of good nutrition and how it relates to athletics.
  • Teach students about sportsmanship, what it means to be a good sport, and how they can be an example for fellow teammates.

Your donation to help us Promote the Future would go towards supplies, transportation, and staffing costs of these in-school visits. There are 49 public and 36 private schools in Knox County and each visit would cost roughly $100. Please help us continue our mission and reach the local youth in our community by making a donation to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
