UVU's Women's Success Center Year at a Glance,
Scholarships and Leadership Opportunities
May 15, 2015
Welcome

We want you to succeed! Because success is defined at an individual level, the following information was developed to advance the amazing students we serve.

We believe that through the programs highlighted below, students truly engage in their own education, create lasting relationships, and enjoy their experiences here at UVU even more.

The LEAD programs at UVU were named in the top 10 percent of leadership development programs in the world for  higher education  institutions  at the annual 2015 Global Leadership Excellence Forum.

The Women's Success Center knows how important these leadership skills are, thus in Spring 2015, the Women's Success Center teamed up with UVU's Center for the Advancement of Leadership (CAL) and launched the pilot of the Women Helping Women LEAD Program. We are excited to announce that it was a great success. We are accepting applications for Fall 2015 through August 1st.

The Utah Women's Walk  project works with students at Utah Valley University . These talented students interview, research, and write about the lives of significant Utah women that most inspire them. We are all inspired by the unique opportunity to learn from the examples of these remarkable  Utah  women.

"Using your real voice might make you uncomfortable. It might make the people around you feel uncomfortable, but until we make it normal for women to be heard, until we are heard for our ideas and not viewed as tokens, that's the price we'll pay. I, for one, have been willing to pay that price." Rebecca Lockhart

This infograph represents the 20 interns and what they are engaged in now.  10% of our student interns advanced to other leadership opportunities.  20% took their new skills and leveraged it into employment at the WSC and  40% graduated!! The remaining students have all been retained and continue to work toward their degrees.

The Women's Success Center has achieved  many important goals through the effort of our amazing interns.

"Because of my internship with the Women's Success Center, I have gained a valuable network, an amazing resume and the support that I needed to graduate.  I now have the skills and confidence needed to work in my dream career." Christene Finch

Stories from our Students

Renee made some heavy choices when she was just 16 years old. Not knowing what else to do, she continued in her abusive marriage for 10 years. Finally she had to save her family from destruction and escaped with her 4 children, running over two thousand miles away, to Utah. With only a high school diploma, very little self-confidence, work experience, or hope, she made the brave choice to start at UVU.
She was 27 years old with no academic direction. She was surviving but living in survival mode, day in and day out.

Renee connected with the Women's Success Center. She was mentored. She was awarded a WISP scholarship. She started an internship. Through these opportunities, Renee became involved on campus and in the community, bringing her children along. She gained self-confidence. For the first time, she felt empowered. Renee achieved her goal in May 2015 and GRADUATED with her bachelor's degree in communications. She is grateful for the support she found at the WSC in some of her darkest hours and the excitement they shared with her in the happiest of times. Working for and gaining her degree has changed not only her life, but also the lives of generations to come.

UVU's Women's Success Center

UVU's Women's Success Center was established in 2011 with the mission to help women enter and graduate from UVU. Recent studies show that Utah has some of the lowest graduation rates for women in the nation. The WSC helps women overcome barriers that can stop them from furthering their college education. They offer many services including- support, advocacy, individual success coaching, scholarship assistance, leadership opportunities and more. The Women's Success Center is dedicated to helping women see themselves as confident and capable of achieving their educational goals.
