Summer 2015

What's all this talk about costs and fees in the financial industry?

For the past few years, there have been many articles written in the papers about cost structures in the financial industry; how fees work, what's required, and what is the standard.

This simply means that there are ongoing changes in our business to better help clients understand the services they have available, and breaking down how they pay for these services. In fact, there is a move to help make things more transparent, which can be helpful for all parties. New requirements are appearing in both documents that we must provide to clients at meetings, and in some cases, as new standards on statements. The benefit is that there are more options being provided, and in some cases, it's allowing us to have enhanced access to product with a more flexible cost structure. Sometimes, this even means being able to claim costs on your taxes, which was more difficult to do in the past.  To provide a guideline on some new items to watch for on your statements:

What's happened so far?

Effective July 15, 2013

It is mandatory to send regular quarterly statements to clients.

At Assante, we've always adhered to this standard at a minimum, so no change would be noted.

Effective June 13, 2014

Fund Facts to be provided to client at Point of Sale. These 2-4 page documents are usually e-mailed, and have replaced the 50+ page prospectuses that we used to provide. A welcome change, I must say.

What's Coming?

Effective December 31, 2015 client statement to show:

-Market Value of each security, which we've always included.

-Which items are covered under an investor protection fund

-Which securities are subject to a DSC (deferred sales charge) if sold.

-Adjusted cost base or original cost of each position.

 Effective July 15th, 2016

-Summary of all charges & compensation to adviser and the   firm will be shown on an annual report.

-Market Values ( beginning & end)

-Annualized percentage returns on a money-weighted basis.

As we continue to initiate these changes, we look forward to helping you better understand your statements, and ensure that you have the best investment & service options for your current situation.

MARKETS:

Portfolio Construction:  Structural or Cyclical MarketTrends

The stock market trends downwards (bearish) in some cycles while upwards (bullish) in others. As a client and investor, what is more important to follow? The answer is both.

Portfolio managers follow cyclical patterns as investment styles move in and out of favor and perform analysis with the goal of understanding structural characteristics in the long term.

Best Website or Articles

www.redcoatsmoving.com

I am in the constant process of "decluttering" my basement. Between gathering family mementos and extra pieces after a renovation, or a child moving to and from university, we're supposed to be the "keeper of all things". I know I'm not alone, and that is why I am highlighting "redcoatsmoving.com" and their blog. They have great articles and ideas to help us downsize, de-clutter, and they specialize in helping get you to the point of actually moving, or enjoying your house again. I have also heard very positive feedback about their services from a number of clients that have used RedCoats. In the meantime, as you're trying to feel free this summer, take in their ideas to "declutter".
