2017 Montréal Wood Convention Deemed A Success

With over 900 attendees representing some 400 companies from 14 countries, and over 110 exhibitors at the trade show, the success of the 5th edition of the Montréal Wood Convention, held here at the Bonaventure Hotel, exceeded all expectations, according to the associations organizing the event.

"For members of the wood products industry, it was essential to be present in the exhibition hall of the Convention. It was the key venue for discussions and exchanges between manufacturers and distributors," said Sven Gustavsson, director of the softwoods group at the Quebec Wood Export Bureau, one of four host associations.

Spotlight - Studio Corelam
Vancouver, B.C.-based studio Studio Corelam formed to create designs that were practical, simple, and beautiful, while supporting their local community with their production and distribution practices. On top of that, they've chosen to focus on sustainability through their use of environmentally-friendly materials and processes, with the goal of reducing their impact on the environment. To kick things off, they're launching a three-piece collection, called Tidal, which will be launching on Kickstarter on May 16th. The pieces are all lightweight but durable and easy to put together and take apart, making them perfect for those who move frequently or live in smaller spaces.

The material they work with is called Corelam™ and it's the result of research by Vancouver designer and professor, Christian Blyt, who created the lightweight, corrugated plywood. It requires little energy to produce in their custom hydraulic press which forms each piece under 400 tons of pressure.

Specifiers Program Update
Roy Manion

We are well into our new fiscal year and lunch & learn sessions at Specifying firms' facilities are the cornerstone of this year; something that has already begun in robust as we have already done several sessions in April and May. We are also planning on working with companies to have specifiers tour their factories; one of our most effective events. Add to that, initial discussions have begun for this year's WoodTALKS at the GBM as well as other activities and you can see that the new fiscal year is off to a quick start..

If you have never participated in the Specifiers Program but are interested in exposing your products or systems to the influential specifier community and wish to be involved or simply want information, please contact me by calling the office or emailing me at [email protected] . Or download our program application.

If you are concerned because you have never presented to architects or don't even know how to put a presentation together, don't let this stop you from joining. We have been assisting companies with all aspects of their presentations for years and would be pleased to assist with yours.
Global Buyers Mission Update

We opened the online registration for our 2016 participating exhibitors to have the first opportunity to guarantee their space at the 2017 GBM. Response has been fantastic!

If you haven't experienced the GBM, or had to miss it this past year, you should be aware that this is the greatest opportunity of the year to showcase your products to over 300 pre-qualified international buyers and North American Architects, Designers, Builders, Contractors, Developers & Engineers. Last year, over $30 million in new business was developed at this event alone.

USA Market Update
Dave Farley

I spent last week traveling around the Interior of the Province with my colleague, Ken Hori, meeting with BC manufacturers, discussing market opportunities in both the US and Latin America. As expected, the discussions tended to focus on the softwood lumber dispute with the US and how it was all going to play out. The opinions and ramifications of the dispute were varied but with a few certainties; BC Industry was expecting the duties and no one is sure how the conflict will play out.

I have been hearing from a number of residential builders across the US who are also concerned about the duties and how they will impact the cost of their construction projects. Of issue is builders who utilize specialty products in their builds, including heavy timber, western red and yellow cedar engineered timbers, and other specialty products made from BC softwoods. Most US construction firms are unaware that these products are subject to the duty as one builder commented, "I thought this was an issue on 2x4 and other dimension lumber". The positive out of all this is that US builders seem more aware and engaged in this go around of the dispute and are pressing their associations to get more involved in helping to come to a solution to this ongoing issue.

Another great thing about getting out to see Industry is being exposed to high quality value added producers in BC . For example we had opportunity to visit with Sperlich Log Construction in Enderby and had lunch in Splatsin Quiliakwa Center. This fabulous building houses the offices of the Splatsin First Nations and features a gas station, Tim Hortons, and an art gallery (pictured above and below). Sperlich Log Construction did an amazing job with providing the timber structure of the building and is a testament to world class manufacturing we have in the Province. As always for more information on the US market, please contact me at [email protected]

BC WOOD MEXICO TRADE MISSION & TRADE SHOW AUGUST 13-19, 2017

This trade mission will take BC Wood members to two of the main wood import regions of Mexico, Nuevo Leon (Monterrey) and Jalisco (Guadalajara) to meet with pre-qualified importers and distributors. Meetings will be a combination of group and one-on-one meetings, and include drivers and interpreters.

The trade show participation will be at TECNO MUEBLE International at Expo Guadalajara. This is the biggest trade fair of machinery, raw materials and accessories for the furniture industry and woodworking industry in Mexico. The four day event features 200 exhibitors from Mexico, U.S., Spain, Brazil, Canada, Central America and more than 5,000 professional buyers. Many of the major lumber importers from the Jalisco region in Mexico exhibit at Tecno Mueble. European Market Update
Brian Hawrysh

BC Wood's returns to the United Kingdom in October 10-12, 2017

BC Wood will return to the UK market place with its' participation in the Timber Expo - October 10-12th in Birmingham. The Timber Expo is part of the UK Construction Week, the largest event of its kind in the UK, attracting 30,276 industry professionals. It is the only show that covers every facet of the construction industry.

Participating in the Timber Expo with BC Wood will allow companies to:

  • position their brands at this high profile event;
  • raise brand awareness;
  • meet new clients;
  • and close business deals.

The Timber Expo allows attendees to explore the emerging possibilities in the timber business and brings together exhibitors and potential consumers under one roof.

Historically, Western European markets, particularly the UK, have demonstrated a preference for the high-value species coming from BC and the value-added products made from these species. There remains a significant opportunity in the UK to grow sales, specifically in high-grade specialty Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, and Hemlock lumber, veneers and finished building materials, log and timber frame homes and potentially 2x4/6 pre-fabricated homes.

BC Wood plans to organize a group pavilion at the Timber Expo for industry representatives and other Canadian forest products associations. For more information regarding the Timber Expo, BC Wood's participation, and costs, please contact Brian Hawrysh at 604-882-7100 or directly at [email protected].
