Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to thank the students and staff for the wonderful job all the homerooms did holding a Circle with the topic of Empathy and Being Kinder Than Necessary to set the tone for March 14, 2018. In addition, we had 19 students that chose to participate in a walkout. It was great seeing the parents also participating with their child. It was important for Woodbury students to focus on how students can make a change.
During the Circles, we reminded the students of our visit from Gus Mahoney and how he has spread this message. Gus challenged us to be more empathetic this year. The teachers and staff reflected on have we met that challenge? The Circle that the students participated in connected to empathy and the student led action on March 14, 2018. We reminded the students, that it is students that are creating change and their voice does matter. What many are realizing is we need more connections, empathy, compassion, and less isolation.
Here were some questions the students reflected upon:
- Have we met the challenge that Gus has given us?
- In what ways have you been empathetic yourself or witnessed empathy?
- Explain a time when you have experienced or witnessed a need for empathy still?
- What are ways that we have shown empathy?
- What is your #17 to make a difference in the climate of your school? Each class came up with one hashtag that was shared over the PA.
- Each homeroom chose the hashtags that resonated with them the most, then they brainstormed the ideas for their own personal action plans.
Thank you for another great week at Woodbury Elementary School!
Always believe!

Drama Club News
We are working hard on painting the sets, acting and creating costumes and props. Our students' attendance at rehearsals, meetings and paint days are very crucial. We can't complete scenes, songs, props or sets if everyone involved isn't there. Please check the calendar or our website to be sure you know when you are needed. The February calendar was passed out at rehearsal this week. It is also hanging in a folder outside of the auditorium.

Rainbow Run
For those parents with rising 7th grade students, we are in need of volunteers for the 2018 Rainbow Run. This is a fabulous fundraiser for the middle school (last year we raised almost $45,000). It is an amazing experience for the middle school students and the entire district. As a parent volunteer, you'll have a terrific chance to get to know the staff and the building as we prepare for the run. The Rainbow Run will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018. We have many opportunities to get involved. We need your help!!!

Help Needed
Please send any
sturdy
cardboard tubes you are ready to recycle to the Product Design Lab ℅ Ms. Scanlon. The inner roll of cardboard from aluminum foil or gift-wrap paper and old poster tubes would be helpful to the sixth graders as they use the Design Cycle to make adaptive equipment in Product Design. Thank you!

PARENT PRACTICE TIPS
DID YOU KNOW?
Regular practice develops self-discipline that goes way beyond music. You can help you child by creating an environment for practice that is positive and engaging. Consistency is the key!
HELP YOUR CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL BY…
Set up a routine
. If a child knows that they are to practice every day at a specific time, it becomes part of their daily routine and increases focused practice.
Make a permanent practice place.
Set up a spot where your child can practice without distraction. This will not only help them focus it will also provide a safe place to store their instrument.
Provide encouragement.
Show that you are interested. Have your child play a mini concert of songs he/she is learning. Set up a reward system for consistent practice. Please do not make practice a punishment!
Communicate with the teacher.
Stay in touch with what is going on in the classroom and ask questions if you need clarification on assignments.
