Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to congratulate our music department, both the 5th and 6th grade band students, as well as the Jazz Band, for two excellent concerts this week at Shaker Heights Middle School! The hard work and dedication from the students and staff was definitely observed during the performances! Job well done!
This year our school motto is "Be Kinder Than Necessary". We have discussed and modeled Empathy a lot in our classrooms this year. According to a recent study, children whose parents value kindness over achievement tend to do better in school than children from families where academic success matters above all else.
In fact, putting pressure on your child to score high marks can have the opposite effect. It can cause their grades and self-esteem to suffer, and lead to depression and anxiety. But when parents promote kindness and respect, students tend to perform better in class. This may be because they feel more secure and know their parents' approval doesn't hinge on their getting good grades.
To show your child how much you value respect and kindness
- Demonstrate courtesy. When talking to others-from neighbors to the cashier at the grocery store-let your child see you being polite. Say please and thank you. Be respectful. These may seem like small things, but they make a big impression.
- Praise positive behavior. When you notice your child doing something nice or loving, let them know! There's no need to go overboard, though. A simple pat on the back will remind them how much you value kindness.
- Promote healthy relationships. Encourage your child to connect with their teachers and classmates. The more support they get from those around them, the less they depend on things like grades and awards to help them feel good about themselves.
Thank you for another great week at Woodbury Elementary School!
Always believe!

Hanna Perkins has great lectures, they are free!
Helping Children Feel Safe In the World & At Home during the holiday season, the exciting changes in routines at home can have a surprising effect on young children; it can make them feel uncertain or even unsafe. Meanwhile, out in the world, they encounter potentially unsafe situations every day – and we want to prepare them for these without frightening them. It’s a lot to ask of parents and children alike.
How parents can help their children balance safety and fear,
both at home and outside is the topic of a free discussion for parents of children 4-12, in partnership with Shaker Heights Schools.
Please join us from 10-11:30 am on Monday, Dec. 11 at Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development,
19910 Malvern Road
in Shaker Heights.
Moderated by Judith L. Pitlick, MA, LPCC,
This discussion will offer insight about the concept of emotional safety, how young children respond to change, the impact of fear and anxiety as children become more aware of risks in the outside world, and what parents can do to help.
This parent chat is free and no reservation is required.
It’s part of a series offering a different child development topic on the 2
nd
Monday of each month throughout the school year.

College Credit Plus
College Credit Plus (CCP) offers students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in High School. This is called "dual credit", since a student earns both high school and college credit for the same course.
Did you know...
Students must complete a Letter of Intent to Participate in College Credit Plus by April 1, 2018 to participate in the 2018/19 school year. The Letter of Intent must be submitted to the College Credit Plus Coordinator at Shaker Heights High School. Students must complete a new Letter of Intent each year they participate. The Letter of Intent indicates interest, but does not lock a student into participating in CCP. The 18/19 letter will be available at the January 10th meeting (see below).
Students and parents/guardians interested in 2018/19 or future years are encouraged to come to our
College Credit Plus Information Meeting on Wednesday, January 10th at 7pm in the Large Auditorium at SHHS.
College representatives and school counseling staff will provide an overview about the benefits and challenges of the program.
