Dear Parents and Guardians,
As many of you may remember, we started the year with a guest speaker, Gus Mahoney. He brought with him a message of spreading empathy. He gave the students a challenge to be kinder than necessary. As we approach March 14, many students will be walking out of classes across the United States in support of the Florida Parkland students.
At Woodbury, we will be using this time to build our awareness of others through our circles and a #whatsyour17. Circles provide an opportunity for every child to speak if they so choose. Circles build community and research has shown they build empathy.
Each classroom will hold a circle prior to March 14th. As a group, they will select one thought/suggestion of how we can show empathy. Each class # will be shared, by the Administrators, with Woodbury students and staff on March 14th at 10:00, over the public address system when your child will be in a circle. At the end of the readings, students will reflect on the #17's to use as a goal to carry forward to continue our purpose.
Thank you for another great week at Woodbury Elementary School!
Always believe!

Drama Club News
We are working hard on painting the sets, acting and creating costumes and props. Our students' attendance at rehearsals, meetings and paint days are very crucial. We can't complete scenes, songs, props or sets if everyone involved isn't there. Please check the calendar or our website to be sure you know when you are needed. The February calendar was passed out at rehearsal this week. It is also hanging in a folder outside of the auditorium.

Woodbury Clocktower Paver Sale
As many of you know, last year Woodbury’s beautiful clock tower bell was restored. As part of the restoration there is an ongoing project to replace the plain brick pavers with commemorative pavers which include family names, tributes etc. The pavers are $75 and can be engraved with up to 3 lines per paver, with a maximum of 14 characters per line. The pavers are placed around the bell on the Woodbury grounds and have been a huge hit. If you have a child at Woodbury you will receive the order form in the mail.
For those without a child at Woodbury the Order Form is attached
here
. Orders will be accepted this year through March 9th, 2018. Pavers will be installed in the early summer.
Thank you for supporting Woodbury!

Rainbow Run
For those parents with rising 7th grade students, we are in need of volunteers for the 2018 Rainbow Run. This is a fabulous fundraiser for the middle school (last year we raised almost $45,000). It is an amazing experience for the middle school students and the entire district. As a parent volunteer, you'll have a terrific chance to get to know the staff and the building as we prepare for the run. The Rainbow Run will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018. We have many opportunities to get involved. We need your help!!!

Please join the Shaker community in
parent discussions through Hanna Perkins
The Hurried Child: How a stressful world affects your kids
For parents, the demands of a career, social obligations and maintaining a standard of living often conflict with how we nurture our children. And with so many after-school enrichment activities, the idea of “superkids" with special abilities doesn’t align with children’s developmental needs and realities. How do the routine stresses of today’s world affect our children, and what can you do about it?
This discussion will offer insights about:
- With so many after school enrichment activities, what is good for the child
- How much is too much?
- What choices are best for the child; best for the family
This free discussion for parents of children 4-12, in partnership with Shaker Heights Schools, is from 10-11:30 a.m., Monday, March 12 at Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development,
19910 Malvern Road
in Shaker Heights.
The discussion is free and no reservation is required. It’s part of a series offering a different child development topic on the 2
nd
Monday of each month throughout the school year.

Help Needed
Please send any
sturdy
cardboard tubes you are ready to recycle to the Product Design Lab ℅ Ms. Scanlon. The inner roll of cardboard from aluminum foil or gift-wrap paper and old poster tubes would be helpful to the sixth graders as they use the Design Cycle to make adaptive equipment in Product Design. Thank you!

PARENT PRACTICE TIPS
DID YOU KNOW?
Regular practice develops self-discipline that goes way beyond music. You can help you child by creating an environment for practice that is positive and engaging. Consistency is the key!
HELP YOUR CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL BY…
Set up a routine
. If a child knows that they are to practice every day at a specific time, it becomes part of their daily routine and increases focused practice.
Make a permanent practice place.
Set up a spot where your child can practice without distraction. This will not only help them focus it will also provide a safe place to store their instrument.
Provide encouragement.
Show that you are interested. Have your child play a mini concert of songs he/she is learning. Set up a reward system for consistent practice. Please do not make practice a punishment!
Communicate with the teacher.
Stay in touch with what is going on in the classroom and ask questions if you need clarification on assignments.
