Flag Retirement Ceremony

Jillian W. is in Troop 7197 at Visitation BVM School. Jillian's love of the American Flag comes from her father. He has been serving our country in the Coast Guard Reserves and been a local police office for over 20 years. Jillian's project was to educate children and adults about the flag and flag etiquette. She did this by gathering friends to walk with her in the Collegeville Memorial Day and Skippack's 4 th of July parades.

She also taught over 50 Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd graders attending a local day camp about the flag, after which the children had patriotic snacks and did a flag craft. Jillian found that many flags flying in her neighborhood were tattered and torn, which means they needed to be retired from use.  To help her neighbors, she set up drop off locations, where she collected over 525 flags!

On August 1 st she held a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the War Memorials in Heebner Park in Worcester. The flag retirement ceremony was very moving as she started the retirement with a reading of what the red stripes mean and then lighting them to burn. Next came the white stripes, and last the field of stars beginning each portion by reading what each symbolizes. Once all the parts of the former flags were burned, the ashes were collected and buried between the War Memorials. There were about 30 people in attendance including other Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, family members, friends, and local residents.

Heebner Park Improvement Projects

Athletic Field Shed Painting

              Before                                   After

Eagle Scout Julian Campanella and his team have been hard at work sprucing up the 5 sheds used by our athletic organizations in Heebner Park.  Julian coordinated his team to prime, paint, and trim all of the sheds in white and green so that all park sheds are uniform.

The Park and Recreation and Public Works Departments are thrilled with his work and thank him and his team for their hard work and dedication to the project!

Bench Staining

The benches surround the gazebo and the playground received
a fresh stain this summer.  Our public works department did a great job on the staining and really improved the look of the benches. Especially those with memorial plaques.

These are the first of several improvement projects for Heebner Park planned over the course of the next year.
Zacharias Creek Trail Update

Another component of the Zacharias Creek Trail is near completion. The limestone trail installation on each side of the new foot bridge has begun, bringing the trail one step closer to completion.

Work is also continuing on the portion along Hollow Road by the creek bed.  Public works dug out the trail and will continue to work on it until its completed over the next several months.

The foot bridge should also open to traffic by the end of September once the final safety features are installed, weather permitting.
