Self-Regulation & Play:
Applying Quantum Physics & Neuroscience to Ancient Wisdom
Workshop Description
We see an ever growing number of children with vague diagnoses and behavior disorders. These children may later receive more specific diagnoses of ADHD, ASD, SPD, PTSD, or PDD, all of which involve some sort of difficulty with self-regulation. Self-regulation includes the ability to take responsibility, organize, explore, and learn to delay gratification. We address these issues with pharmaceuticals and technology while often ignoring or dismissing unstructured play, the evolutionary means of acquiring self-regulation skills. Unstructured play involves physical dexterity, creativity, imagination, problem solving, negotiating, and mindfulness — traits of self-regulation essential to the assumption of adult roles.

This seminar brings attendees a high-energy and exciting program blending neuroscience, quantum physics, occupational science, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Unstructured play—the key to developing self-regulation —requires facilitation for children who cannot self-calm, process sensory information or interact with novelty in their environment and social interactions. Attendees will use a variety of tools to determine areas of strength and interest which naturally draw children into self-regulating play. Using this holistic mind, body and  spirit approach can succeed where previous protocols have failed.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
1. Compare various brain-based therapeutic approaches that improve functional outcomes for ASD, ADHD, and SPD .

2.  Differentiate between adult-directed play and unstructured, freely chosen, self-directed, and self-motivating play.

 3. Use the Rainbow Kids Play Scale to determine a child’s developmental level, gaps in skill acquisition and the most effective way to structure therapeutic interventions.

4. Identify five occupations critical to self-regulation and how these impact body (neurophysiology), mind (psychology), and spirit (energetic relationships described in quantum physics).

5. Utilize "Five Elements" from Traditional Chinese Medicine to create a sensory diet that will foster self-regulation and executive functioning to synchronize the "out of sync" child.

6. Write play-based goals that align with the Common Core or state standards to get everyone “on-board” with therapeutic approaches that demonstrate progress.

Speaker:
Susan Roberts, MDiv , OTRL

Susan Roberts began her career as an occupational therapist working with children challenged by physical disorders and developmental delays.  Her interests in non-Western healing approaches led her to Harvard where she studied the role of sensory integration in these practices.  Roberts has an integrative approach to occupational therapy that incorporates five elemental occupations (eating, playing, loving, working, and sleeping) found in Traditional Chinese Medicine and other non-Western approaches to healing.

Susan Roberts has authored three books: Kinesiology: Movement in the Context of Activity from Elsevier; My Kid Eats Everything: The Journey from Picky to Adventurous Eating; and Food Explorer's Passport: for Mealtime Adventures.
