Obesity on the Agenda!
In the next few months we will be reaching out to all of you to help us advocate for higher prioritisation of obesity in 2018.

This is a critical year for advancing non-communicable disease and nutrition on the global health agenda, including the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs this September in New York.

Watch this space for more details on how you can engage and support this important initiative!
Chilean Physicians SCOPE Certified
84 physicians in Chile were recently awarded SCOPE Certification after completing the online SCOPE E-Learning course. A meeting was held to celebrate the occasion, led by Dr Ada Cuevas of World Obesity's Clinical Care Committee. Dr Cuevas commented:

"Demographics and socioeconomic factors and changes in food supply and lifestyles have led to a significant increase of obesity in the Chilean population. Data from the last National Health Survey of 2017 showed that 39.8 % and 31.2% of the adult population are suffering of overweight and obesity respectively.

"For this reason, it is crucial to have health professionals with adequate training to prevent and manage this huge problem in Chile. The recent certification in Chile of 84 physicians by the SCOPE program will give an important contribution to afford the challenge of reduce the prevalence of obesity and their consequences in Chile."

Global Survey of Health Care Systems For Obesity

The World Obesity Federation is planning a survey of guidelines and practices for the treatment of obesity around the world, to be launched early this year. The project, dubbed MAPPS (Management and Advocacy for Providers, Patients, and Systems), has been given support from Novo Nordisk.

Besides ‘mapping’ current national guidelines and health care pathways for people with obesity, it is hoped the project will lead to stronger advocacy roles for World Obesity member organisations lobbying their health service providers and health authorities, and stronger patient representation in future healthcare development.
World Obesity Lined Up to Be a Partner in Two Horizon 2020 Projects

World Obesity is anticipating being a partner in two European Union-funded projects awarded under the Horizon 2020 research programme. The projects were both shortlisted for funding in the call “How to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic?” and are currently in grant agreement negotiations before final approval.

World Obesity will assist with knowledge translation, dissemination and exploitation of the outputs of the projects.
Obesity Impacts On the Family

World Obesity has been invited to join a UK research project on the impact of childhood obesity on families, led by Imperial College London. The project, titled “ Does childhood obesity hinder human capital development?” is funded by the UK charity The Health Foundation. A roundtable meeting will be held in April to encourage non-governmental organisations, researchers and policy makers interested in the issue to contribute to shaping the programme of research.
