Mr. Lester Munson, WorldChicago Hospitality Host and   

Writer and Reporter, ESPN.com and ESPN; Adjunct Instructor at Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism

 

Lester Munson is a writer and reporter at ESPN.com and ESPN who specializes in legal affairs and investigations. For 23 years, he has reported on money, celebrity, violence, sex, drugs, race, gender, greed, litigation, court decisions and government actions in the sports industry. His recent assignments include the National Hockey League lockout; the concussion crisis in the National Football League; the bounty scandal in the NFL; the Penn State scandals; and, the steroids investigations and trials of Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, and Lance Armstrong. From 1991 to 2004, he was on the staff of Sports Illustrated. He appears frequently on National Public Radio and WTTW, the Chicago affiliate of the Public Broadcasting System. He has received several awards in journalism, and his work has appeared in the series, "Best American Sportswriting." He is an adjunct instructor at the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism. He is a graduate of Princeton University and The University of Chicago Law School. His wife, Judith, is the executive director of the International Collaborative for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and has devoted her legal career to public health issues on the local, state, federal, and international levels. Lester and Judith live in Chicago and are WorldChicago hospitality hosts.

"Transport Yourselves to Turkmenistan"

WorldChicago will host a public forum for 4 delegates from Turkmenistan coming to Chicago on the Open World Program through the Library of Congress.  They are all working in the field of transportation in Turkmenistan, and coming to study transportation management in the urban context of Chicago. In this forum, they will share a background of the transportation system in Turkmenistan, highlighting the opportunities and challenges they face in relation to improving the efficiency and integration of various forms of transportation in urban and rural areas. Q & A to follow. Continental breakfast will be provided.

WorldChicago Young Internationals Event 

"No Place Like Home"

Open to those young AND those young at heart!

Join WorldChicago, in partnership with the Chicago Area Peace Corps Association, for a look at how cultural identity can change over time. Our speaker, Teresa Albor, will share how her experiences living abroad have molded her cultural identity. She will also explore the impact this change in identity has on what it means to return "home." Albor lived in southeast Asia for over a decade, having serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines, and is now married to a British Diplomat.  She has lived and worked in Manila, India and Hong Kong as well as London and Eastern Europe.  For the last two years she has been living in Chicago, where her husband is serving as the British Consul General. Currently, a multidisciplinary artist working in the realms of installation, performance, social practice and sculpture, she has also supported herself as a journalist and project manager.    

Q & A to follow. Beverages and appetizers will be served.

Summertime Hosting Opportunities

WorldChicago is actively seeking homestay hosts for a number of adult and youth international exchange programs this summer. 

  

The program participants are in meetings and scheduled activities all day during the week, spending time with host families primarily during evenings and weekends.

 

Adult Programs

 

Empower Access Fellows Program - Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan - April 26-May 21, 2013 - WorldChicago seeks hosts for 3 fellows participating in internships in public policy.

Bilingual Teacher Training Program - Spain - June 29-July 27, 2013- In partnership with Roosevelt University, WorldChicago seeks homestay hosts for a delegation of 20 teachers from Madrid, Spain.

 

Open World Program- Buryatia, Russia - June 21-26, 2013 - WorldChiago seeks homestay hosts for a delegation of 6 journalists from the Buryatia region of Russia.

 

Community Connections - Kazakhstan - July 26-August 16, 2013 - WorldChicago seeks homestay hosts for a delegation of 10 professionals exploring the topic of HIV awareness.

IVLPINTERNATIONAL VISITOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
International Visitor Leadership Program:

Description: This U.S. Department of State program identifies foreign leaders in a variety of fields to visit the U.S. for 3 weeks (visiting 3-5 cities) to meet their professional counterparts, explore their thematic interest area(s), and experience America firsthand. These visitors stay in hotels.
