Would You Invite a Team to Come?

by David Nakhla

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another ... whoever serves, as one
who serves by the strength that God supplies - in order that in everything
God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.
I Peter 4:10-11 (ESV)

Short-term volunteers help out at Providence OPC in West Lebanon, New Hampshire

OP churches and church plants!  Here's an idea for you for this summer.  Since we have
fewer overseas options this year for those who wish to participate in short-term missions, how about if you were to create a short-term missions opportunity here at home - at your church?

Is there a ministry, VBS, community outreach program, or church refurbishment project that you could undertake if you had the help of volunteers from other OP churches or presbyteries?

We are commanded to use our gifts in serving one another!  If you were to request a team to come help out at your church, you'd be creating an opportunity for those who desire to use their gifts in short-term service this summer.

Consider the example of Providence Presbyterian Church in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. Through www.opcstm.org and the S.T.O.R.M. Report, they made known their need for help in getting their church building fixed up, and were blessed by OPC members from across the country who responded to the call!  See full article, below.

OP churches/church plants in Florida, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Texas, and Wisconsin were also blessed to receive short-term mission teams in 2014!

Might your church be the next to accomplish a project with the help of your OPC brothers and sisters? Might you be a blessing to those who come by giving them the gift of an opportunity to serve?

Contact us at OPCShortTermMissions@opc.org or click here to complete a form to request a team and get started!

OPC Volunteers at Work in New Hampshire!

Some of the men, women, and children who came to help out at Providence OPC!

Last August, we shared a request from Pastor Tim Herndon of Providence Presbyterian (an OP church plant in West Lebanon, New Hampshire) for volunteers to come and help with the refurbishment of their recently acquired church building!

Providence Presbyterian received a GREAT response to their call for help!

Pastor Tim Herndon recently shared this follow-up report:

The saints of Providence Presbyterian were SO blessed by the warm fellowship and generous service of those who came to help!  Our little diamond in the ROUGH of a building now stands out in our neighborhood as the nicely kept church building - with the lights on and with activity going on inside and out!

  • Bruce and Cheryl Kliewer (Redeemer OPC, Santa Maria, California), helped us get our front porch trim painted. They made a long weekend of it, saw some fall foliage, and then helped another church in the presbytery!
  • Stephen Diercks (Providence OPC, Pataskala, Ohio) and Matthew Gertler (Knox OPC, Mt. Vernon, Ohio), spent 10 days with us, doing general demolition inside, general brush clean-up outside, painting most of the exterior trim, and even playing piano for Sunday worship!
  • Caleb Pearson (Pilgrim OPC, Bangor, Maine), spent a long weekend leading in some light carpentry, helping with a workday, and painting the last of the trim.
  • Work teams from Covenant OPC (Barre, Vermont) and Merrimack Valley OPC (North Andover, Massachusetts) came for a Saturday clean-up outside, working with chain saws, trimmers, and rakes, and planting flower beds.

St-Marc's Reformed Church in Quebec City is seeking teams of English-speaking volunteers to come and work with a bilingual coordinator to conduct "English for Kids" Bible Camps in Quebec once again this summer!

  • An ideal team will have between 15 and 20 members.  Sometimes two smaller teams are matched together.
  • Teams are invited to provide their own camp materials and curriculum which will be reviewed and accepted beforehand.
  • Costs for volunteer teams include housing, food, transportation, as well as teaching materials, rental of the church facility, and publicity (though a considerable part of these costs are covered by children's registration fees).
Dates:

"English for Kids" Camps:

Teach English in South Korea

Here is an opportunity for short-term service in a foreign land - utilizing your "natural talents" as an English speaker!

The Missionary Training Institute (MTI) in South Korea, founded by OPC Missionaries Dr. Young J. Son and his wife Mary Lou in 1983 to train Koreans for missionary service, is seeking teachers for its ESL (English as a Second Language) program.

Evangelical Christians with some ESL experience (if possible) and a love for the Lord and his people are needed to teach missionaries or missionary candidates practical words and expressions they can use for daily conversation, how to describe in English what they see in everyday life, and listening and writing skills.
