"However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results."  ~ Winston Churchill

Many of my clients are looking for more innovative, engaging and collaborative ways of conducting their strategic planning sessions. I would like to share with you an exciting and powerful tool called the Business Model Canvas.  Below is a video to help explain this tool, plus the strategic process I have used with my clients.

Why is this approach so effective?

  • Participants learn how to think more strategically about the company.
  • The framework focuses your efforts to find ways to increase revenue and/or decrease cost.
  • We end the strategic planning session with a clear road map and a process for monitoring progress and course correcting to ensure your success.

Contact me and together we will explore how the Business Model Canvas might improve the effectiveness and engagement of your strategic planning process.

Business Model Generation

The Business Model Canvas provides companies with a fascinating and elegantly simple way of thinking about their current business model and envisioning future ones.  These are the steps I typically use to facilitate a strategic planning session using this framework.

Participants complete pre-work.

All participants fill out a business model canvas on the current business model.  Click here to see the canvas pre-work.  I have found that participants find this experience to be extremely helpful to them in gaining a deeper understanding of all aspects of the business.  In addition, all participants are asked to think of one or two "blue sky" ideas for ways the company might improve the current revenue streams and/or improve the current cost structure.  This pre-work is their ticket to the strategic planning session.

Day One: Reaching agreement on our future direction and key priorities
The morning is spent debriefing the participants' pre-work and filling in the company's current business model canvas.  In the afternoon we identify our core competencies as an organization, which serves as a lens when we discuss the blue sky ideas.  Through a facilitated process of small group work and large group debriefs, we choose our top 3 to 5 opportunity areas that are most ripe for further exploration.

Day Two: Creating our road map, monitoring our progress, course-correcting
In the morning we revisit and reconfirm or revise our opportunity choices from the day before.  We then conduct a force field analysis - what are those forces working for and against our success in making these opportunities a reality?  Based on that discussion, we identify our key areas of focus, as well as specifically how we would measure success.  We then create a concrete one-year action plan with clear milestones, due dates, and accountabilities.  And finally, we specify our process for monitoring our progress and course correcting to ensure we are successful.

Clients love FireFly's two new business simulation offerings!

Design Thinker Sim

Innovation.  Many companies have made innovation a priority, but perhaps they have not yet given their employees the tangible tools they need to successfully generate breakthrough ideas.  Using the proven tools and processes of IDEO, participants in the Design Thinker  simulation will learn how to put the consumer at the center of your innovation initiatives, just like P&G, IBM, and GE.

 ExperienceChange Sim

Change Management.  Innovation means change. Is your company ready?  Based on the time-tested models of change gurus John Kotter and William Bridges, the ExperienceChange business simulation gives your leaders an opportunity to practice introducing change into an organization - and get immediate feedback.  These learnings can then be immediately applied to their current or upcoming change initiatives.

Let's get started with a hands-on, interactive demo!
