President's message
New board sets priorities, plans

Kaye Spector - high res
Kaye Spector

Greetings everyone,

I hope you are all having a nice summer. The SPJ board takes a break during July and will meet again in August for an organizational meeting. While we are taking a break, I've asked my fellow board members to think about and identify three areas of priority and focus for our chapter during the next year. We can then sift through those priorities to set an agenda for our activities in the coming months.

It's not news to anyone that journalism is going through cataclysmic changes, and our chapter is feeling the repercussions. I'm eager to explore with my fellow SPJ members how we can best meet those challenges for the good of our chapter and its members.

In the last year, one of our goals was to improve our social media platforms. As a result, the chapter now has an active Facebook page and we're happy to see that the number of people following our page has grown tremendously. If you haven't 'liked' Society of Professional Journalists -- Cleveland Pro Chapter on Facebook, I invite you to do so. Posts are made by various members of the board.

We've also revamped our website, which now includes up-to-date information on the board, our upcoming events and our ongoing programs.

I'm sure that among the issues we will be looking at in the coming year will include making sure that the Philip W. Porter scholarship continues to support college-bound high school seniors pursuing a journalism career. Other possible areas may include increasing membership, a community service project or partnering with local students to host a program of interest to journalists.

I'd love to hear your ideas as well on what you'd like to see SPJ - Cleveland Pro Chapter do in 2015-16. Email me at [email protected]

Kaye Spector

President, SPJ Cleveland
