CHACON, CORONA WIN XTERRA MEXICO

Full Results|Photo Gallery

Leonardo ChaconTapalpa, Jalisco – Olympians Leonardo Chacon from Costa Rica and Fabiola Corona from Mexico City captured the sixth edition of the XTERRA Mexico Championship at Tapalpa, Jalisco on Saturday.

It’s the second Mexico title for Corona, and the first for Chacon who was racing in just his second XTERRA championship.

XTERRA Managing Director “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas was on-site to take in all the action and brings us this report.

A beautiful day for the 6th XTERRA Mexico. This is the 3rd year in the State of Jalisco in the terrific small village of Tapalpa, about 2 hours from Guadalajara. A record number of entries for both Sprint and Champ distance assembled early at the starting point of Valle de Largo (Valley of the Lake) near the geological phenomena named Las Piedrotas.

The champ race started at 9:15 with four wave starts. It was wonderful chaos in the water as the fast pro's started lapping into the slower age groupers but everyone survived in fine fashion. Leonardo Chacon from Costa Rica took an immediate lead with Leonardo Saucedo just seconds behind. South Africa's Dan Hugo took off hard in an effort to catch Chacon and took last years Champion, Francisco "Paco" Serrano with him.

XTERRA CZECH HOSTS EUROPE'S BEST

The stars are out in Prachatice as the best racers in the XTERRA European Tour (XET) are toeing the line at the XTERRA Czech Championship on Saturday.

Nico LebrunSix of the top seven men and eight of the top nine women are on the start list, highlighted by current points leaders and last year’s Czech Champs Nicolas Lebrun and Helena Erbenova.

This is the sixth of eight points scoring events in the XET, with XTERRA Germany right behind next weekend. While Erbenova has already wrapped up the women’s crown for the second straight year having won the last four majors, the men’s race is wide-open.

Lebrun, who will retire after the 2013 season, has won the Czech Championship five times – his first coming 10 years ago in 2003 followed by wins in 04, 06, 08, and last year. Lebrun will be pushed by XTERRA Triple Crown and Greece champion Ben Allen as well as Spain’s Hector Guerra who has been in the top four three times this season, including a runner-up performance at XTERRA Switzerland. The locals are excited to see the XTERRA debut of 23-year-old Czech mountain bike phenom Matej Nepustil.

In the women’s race all the big guns are back with 4x XET and Spain winner Renata Bucher, 2x XET and 2011 Czech Champ Marion Lorblanchet, Triple Crown winner Jacqui Slack, and South Africa champ Carla Van Huyssteen.

VINE, WIDNEY WIN XTERRA CANMORE

Mike VineMike Vine and Chantell Widney captured the XTERRA Canmore titles in the Canadian Rockies on Sunday. It’s the second straight year Vine won the event, and it’s the first off-road title for Widney – who recently placed 3rd at XTERRA Abruzzo in Italy and 3rd at the ITU Cross Tri World Championships in the Netherlands.

Vine, a long-time XTERRA pro who won the inaugural XTERRA Canada Championship back in 2000, posted the fastest bike and run splits and took the tape by more than 10 minutes over Jeff Krar.

In the women’s race Widney led from start-to-finish and finished nearly 10 minutes ahead of runner-up Sarah Backler from New Zealand – who was the third overall amateur finisher at XTERRA Worlds last year.

EPC TRAINING - WORKOUT OF THE WEEK - SWIM SESSION

Swim StartWe are less than 7 weeks out from XTERRA USA Championships and 12 out from XTERRA World Championships, it's time to get serious with your training! If you've been training and racing hard all spring and summer, like most XTERRA athletes, and you hope to race well in September and October then it's time to change things up. We are continuing the theme of revisiting some 'base' training to rebuild some aerobic fitness and strength.

The following swim session is another key session through the first few weeks ofEPC Multisport's XTERRA Championship Training Plan. With this workout you do multiple sets consisting of descending distances and building paces. For this workout you need to know your goal race pace per 100 as that is what you are building towards by the end of each round. For the example below, the swimmer’s goal race pace is 1:30 per 100. Add more rounds to the set as you build your endurance each week. You can also add a strength component by alternating rounds with normal freestyle and pulling. The rest intervals are kept short in order to maximize aerobic conditioning. Have at it!

VANDERLUGT FAMILY IS GOING A LONG WAY TO RUN XTERRA

Sheri Vanderlugt is the inspiration for husband and sons to run

The VanderlugtsThe XTERRA Trail Run National Championship is open to runners of all ages from all states, and the Vanderlugt family is a perfect example.

This year's event is scheduled for September 22 at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden,Utah, and ONLINE REGISTRATION IS OPEN BY CLICKING HERE.

Phil Vanderlugt and his sons, Alec and Reed, will all be entering the XTERRA Trail Run Nationals together for the first time this year, and they are taking a circuitous route. They reside in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but got introduced to XTERRA Trail Run events in Colorado.

"We are a family of road warriors!" Phil said. "Our kids have been making long road trips since 6 months of age.  They are amazing travelers. We did drive to Colorado for every race!"

The Vanderlugts often take winter vacations to Colorado for skiing, so they are familiar with the area. The drive from Michigan to Colorado, however, is never an easy trip - even in the family's recreational vehicle. The drive takes approximately 24 hours each way, and they often did it with only a few stops so that Alec and Reed would not miss school time.

"As you know, there is no XTERRA Trail Series in Michigan," Phil explained. "The boys and I ran our first half-marathon together in Colorado two years ago in the town of Granby, and their confidence in running soared. We love Colorado!"

The drive and dedication paid off, as two members of the family earned age-group championships for the XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series. Phil captured first place for the season in the 40-44 division, and Reed took first in the 10-14 division (Alec was a close second).

Because of that success, they decided to enter the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship in Utah. That trip will be a little too long to make in the family's RV during the school year, so they will book flights.
