Literacy Night was a complete success! It was so great to see so many YGS families enjoying the evening. My personal favorite was the activities related to the theme perseverance! It was great to see the kids trying their best to work through the challenges. A special thank you to our PTO for providing all of our families with pizza! YGS is already planning our next family night, which will be before winter break.

The first quarter of school ends on Wednesday! It is hard to believe one quarter is complete. The teachers will be busy preparing report cards, which will go live via Home Access on October 24th. Conferences are on October 26th and 27th. If you haven't set up a time to meet with your child's teacher, please reach out to them to schedule a time.

Information about Halloween will come home in your child's backpack this week. Please be sure to read the flyer as it outlines the day's events.

Have a great week!

As part of the Learning and Grading Plan, it is important to understand the difference between formative and summative assessments.

Formative assessments  are ongoing checks for understanding that provide teachers with the necessary feedback to guide instruction. Formative assessments are  not  counted as part of a grade.

Summative assessments  are evaluations of a student's mastery of the objectives. Summative assessments typically count for grades.

How are academic behaviors and performance different?
While academic behavior is aligned with effort, participation and attitude, academic performance is based on a student's knowledge and skills. The District 115 Learning and Grading Policy is focused on academic performance.

"A grade is supposed to provide an accurate, undiluted indicator of a student's mastery of learning standards. That's it. It is not meant to be part of a reward, motivation, or behavioral contract system" (VanDeWeghe, 2007).
