2015 "Virtual" Candidate Forum: Q & A with the Candidates!
Today is also an election day in Traverse City. If you're not sure which candidate for Mayor or City Commission fits what's important to you, check out this year's new Virtual Candidate Forum that highlights four City Commission candidates, and two Mayoral candidates, on their background and key topics in the community. The forum includes both video responses as well as a written dialogue from each candidate. The questions that the forum addresses include: "What role do you think the business community plays within the City of Traverse City?" and "What are three of your priorities if elected?" among others. If you are a registered city voter and find yourself on the fence of which candidate you should support, make sure you tap into this unique resource HERE.

Non-perishable Food Donations
The YP Committee has made it a point this year to bring in non-perishable food items as well as make financial donations at every meeting. The proceeds of this mission are then passed onto the Father Fred Foundation. Year to date, the committee has donated an equivalent of 558 servings equaling 186 meals. THANK YOU to all who have donated and contributed to this cause. For more information about the YP's donation or to learn how you can join in the cause please contact Josh Janowiak.

The excitement is building for the Chamber's Membership Event coming up December 8 - 10 headquartered at West Bay Beach - Holiday Inn Resort. An extraordinary group of event chairs have stepped up to lead the effort, including:
  • Tammy Tarsa (Integrity Home Health Care)
  • Allison Beers (Events North)
  • Kevin Schlueter (Kalkaska Screw Products)
  • Troy Broad (Team Elmer's)
  • Warren Call (Huntington Bank)
  • Stephen Peacock (Rehmann)
  • Sander Scott (TCAPS)
  • Dale Tumey (Huntington Bank)
  • Lisa Pointe (Runner's chair - Great Lakes Children's Museum)
These chairs will assemble their captains and teams to gear up for a fun but fierce few days of competition during the Membership Event to bring new members into the Chamber. YPs Unite: Affordable Downtown Housing Proposal Needs Your Support TONIGHT
We are at a crucial moment for the success of our region. The YP voice is needed now more than ever to help develop our footprint in downtown. Housing downtownthat is affordable for the working class is virtually non-existent, which is what the River West project aims to address. Come to the City Planning Commission meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. and stand in support with your fellow YPs. For more details about the project you can access that HERE. If you are unable to attend tonight, don't be afraid to send an email to City Commissioners expressing your stance at CityCommissioners@
TCAPS Strategic Financial Plan: YP implications
TCAPS is currently going through a 3-5 year strategic financial planning process. The goal is to preserve student programming and advance educational priorities, such as updating curriculum materials, while remaining financially responsible with the community's investment in its schools. During the first phase of the process, the overhead expenses of maintaining three elementary buildings with less than 200 students have been identified as a potential area for cost savings and options are currently being explored. Check out more depth of the process HERE.
As we move through the process, it is important to remember that schools are a reflection of the community. Traverse City is currently grappling with the issues of affordable housing and good paying jobs, the kind that attract young professionals and families, and the solutions developed will shape the future of our community. The demographic shifts in the last 10-15 years indicate that as a state and region, we are seeing a decline in the number of school aged children. The choices we make and the solutions we pursue will continue to be reflected in our community's schools.
Be sure to stay connected to your schools. Subscribe to their newsletter HERE.

Leadership at the Movies
Join us for another intriguing screening of a great film with a leadership expert's evaluation and lessons. On Wednesday, November 4 from 7:30 -9 a.m. at Bijou by the Bay, leadership strategist Jonathan Pool will break down The King's Speech and explore the deeper meaning while discussing leadership lessons and takeaways. The Leadership at the Movies program is new to the chamber for 2015 and has provided members with a new and engaging way to broaden their leadership skills and knowledge base.
