The Thrill of the Find:
Exploring the Bill Jamieson Collection
Monday, October 7, 2013

A unique collector and storyteller, the late Bill Jamieson and his fiancée Jessica Phillips welcomed YPC Patrons into their home several times to view Bill’s vast collection of predominantly tribal art and artifacts.

On behalf of Jessica Phillips, we are pleased to invite YPC Patrons to view a portion of this collection in a salon-style evening where the discussion may cover topics such as: why do people collect, how do they decide what to collect, where do they buy, how do they price objects, why do we need collectors and how do collectors decide what to donate to a museum like the ROM?

Spaces for this event have been awarded. For questions please contact Jessica Hall-Cummings at ypc@rom.on.ca.

Four corners of Bronfman Hall were transformed into satellite labs as the conservators demonstrated techniques for cleaning, repairing and examining minute details, not seen by the naked eye, on some of the ROM’s prized objects.

If you're interested in learning more about how to apply the Conseravtion department's techniques to your own collections, check out the the Preserving Your Collection workshop on October 26th.

New Acquisition: 225-Million-Year Old Fossil Tree Trunk

In case you missed the photo on our Facebook wall, this summer the ROM acquired a
Late Triassic Araucarian Conifer, purchased with the generous support of the Louise Hawley Stone Charitable Trust. What is that you ask? It’s a vertically-sectioned, polished fossil tree trunk standing nearly 2 metres in height and over one-half metre in diameter. It dates from the late Triassic—meaning it’s about 225 million years old!

The best-known examples of such logs are protected within the boundaries of Petrified Forest National Park. This beautiful specimen arrived on our loading dock in two massive crates and was legally collected from private lands on Milky Ranch in the Chinle Formation, Arizona.

New acquisitions such as this one are given an initial inspection, and are brought to the intake room where they are then given a thorough examination by our Conservation team. Next they may go to the freezer for two weeks to ensure any pests are eradicated. When the specimen won’t fit in the freezer, it is wrapped in plastic to isolate the crate materials and prevent anything live from escaping until staff can dispose of pests.

The ROM is planning to display the pair of polished halves in the Triassic section of the James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs. Check the ROM blog for updates on this story.
