Young Patrons Circle (YPC) supports the ROM’s overall mission to build community by nurturing discovery and inspiring wonder. Through unique educational, social and cultural initiatives, YPC enhances the ROM experience while providing a philanthropic opportunity to those 45 and younger.

Dear YPC Patrons,

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our wonderful YPC Garden Party last week. For those of you not able to join us, I wanted to echo the remarks made by Rosario Cartagena thanking our dedicated volunteers from the Executive and Ambassadors for their fantastic work supporting YPC. The leadership, enthusiasm and warmth all of you bring to the program are invaluable.

The fall is a hotbed of activity at the ROM with the opening of two new exhibitions, Carbon 14: Climate is Culture and Wildlife Photographer of the Year, plus our signature fundraiser, Fact or Fiction (October 2) and RUN for the ROM (October 20). We will also enjoy a new season of Friday Night Live events starting October 18, 2013. Mesopotamia: Inventing Our World, presented by RSA Insurance and supported by YPC as an Exhibit Patron, continues through the fall accompanied by a series of fascinating lectures presented by international scholars.

I hope to see many Patrons at our upcoming YPC events. On September 18th we will be taking a behind-the-scenes look at the ROM’s Conservation department with a series of special demonstrations using objects from the vaults. On October 7th, we have been given an exclusive opportunity to view part of the late Bill Jamieson’s world-renowned tribal art collection before it is sold. We have also been invited to tour Art Toronto on October 26, which features the work of some exciting emerging artists. You can find a full list of our fall events on our website.

Finally, I’m pleased to welcome Claude Tambu—a champion of YPC and RUN for the ROM—to our YPC Executive. Claude is a Discoverer level donor and a passionate ambassador for YPC and the ROM and we are thrilled to have him on board.

Thank you all for your philanthropic leadership as Young Patrons of the ROM.

Sincerely,

Anna-Maria Kaneff

The Thrill of the Find:
Exploring the Bill Jamieson Collection
Monday, October 7, 2013

A unique collector and storyteller, the late Bill Jamieson and his fiancée Jessica Phillips welcomed YPC Patrons into their home several times to view Bill’s vast collection of predominantly tribal art and artifacts.

On behalf of Jessica Phillips, we are pleased to invite YPC Patrons to view a portion of this collection in a salon-style evening where the discussion may cover topics such as: why do people collect, how do they decide what to collect, where do they buy, how do they price objects, why do we need collectors and how do collectors decide what to donate to a museum like the ROM?

This event will have limited capacity. An invitation with RSVP information will be circulated in September.

ROM Grants a Wish for a 12-year Old

ROMCAN and Make-A-Wish Canada partnered to make a young boy’s dream come true on August 8, 2013.

Damien, who has a long standing fascination with dinosaurs, and who has been diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, was granted his wish of being a palaeontologist for a day!

Damien toured the James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs and the Life in Crisis: Schad Gallery of Biodiversity with ROM Palaeontologist Dr. David Evans and Dr. Hans Larsson, Canada Research Chair in Vertebrate Palaeontology, McGill University.

Damien was also granted behind the scenes access to the collections and the Palaeobiology lab where he worked on the preparation of new dinosaur material.

Since its inception in 2006, ROMCAN has sought to make the ROM and its collections available to all members of the community by mitigating barriers that may prevent individuals from visiting the Museum. ROMCAN partners with some 50 community agencies to help new Canadians, marginalized youth, families living in poverty, those with disabilities, abused women and kids with life-threatening medical conditions experience the magic of the Museum.
