July 2017 Newsletter

Dear  ,

On July 4th, will you be
surfing in the sea and partaking in a clamba ke on the sand, or floating in the pool and then enjoying a backyard barbecue, while barely clad? If so, you will likely spend a good portion of the day under the hot rays of the summer sun during one of the longest days of the year.

But, unlike those who celebrated Independence Day back in the day when Yankee Doodle rode his pony into town with his dandy feather in his cap, you
might be wearing little more than a bathing suit and sunscreen!  Did Yankee Doodle know that his hat and robe were protecting him from the dangers of the sun? Did he realize that without them, he could easily have gotten  skin cancer ? Probably not.

Here are the 3 most important things to remember when selecting your sun protection :

1.  Don't focus only on SPF. Yup! That's because SPF, the Sun Protection Factor, pertains to only UVB protection (against tanning rays) and not the UVA (cancer causing rays). Instead, choose a 'broad spectrum' sunscreen for full UVA/UVB protection.

2.   Learn the INs and OUTs. Because UVA rays permeate through glass, and have the same intensity year-round, you must be sure to protect your skin while indoors as well.

3. Get Physical. Those with allergies, sensitive skin, rosacea, and children under 6 months should definitely use physical sunscreens as they are chemical free, and contain naturally occurring minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to safely provide full spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

It's best to prevent sun damage in the first place; but for those bothered by existing issues, peels  and  IPL  can help restore texture and remove"age spots", while Botox and fillers can remove wrinkles, and  necklift facelift  and  eyelid  procedures can tighten and re-drape skin that is weathered. Remember that you can safely get your Vitamin D from a maximum of 15
minutes of unprotected sun exposure daily.
After that,
slather up, don your feathered cap,
and channel your inner Yankee Doodle!
