Editor's Message - July 2013

 As I write this message, I am sitting at the Wozo Plaza in Mirebalais, Haiti after spending a day visiting L'Ecole De Choix. L'Ecole De Choix is a trilingual elementary school serving some of the most deserving and beautiful children I have ever met. I am here with a group of folks most based in Chicago, mostly from DePaul University who I already consider a new bunch of wonderful friends.
I have seen, during the bus rides from the airport to the hotel, and then the hotel to the school, several animals wandering, grazing, walking around. I have seen goats, chickens, roosters, peacocks, and dogs. There is a persistent boniness to the animals, who placidly graze on the grass that they seem able to find.
I have learned on this trip that Haitian people have a different relationship, or orientation, to animals than we do in the U.S. Because of the poverty in Haiti, animals are seen as objects. Sometimes, animals such as dogs are seen as competition for scarce resources such as food. One of my new friends told me that on a prior trip to Haiti, she saw a dog with all four legs bound with rope, killed because he had been eating chickens. It was a matter of survival, at its most fundamental manifestation, for the perpetrator.
The fact that in our country, a place dripping with privilege, abuse and neglect of animals occurs, feels particularly loathsome. I do feel that the good guys outnumber the bad which is why I remain so passionate about the work that we do.
As I reflect on this bit of culture shock that I am experiencing, I am wishful and prayerful for a future for Haiti that includes the love, peace, fun and joy that comes from having relationships with animals such as those that we are privileged to have. Mostly, I think, my prayer is for that peace. When I get home, I know I am home when I get my arms around my boys. It is as vital to my well being and quality of life as anything I can imagine. I know I have plenty of good company in this regard.

Saturday 11:00am Tea Party at HatWKS, a wonderful little Hat Boutique where we can visit and try on some of her beautiful and curious hats!
Saturday night September 7, 7:00 pm we will be having our Smoky Awards Banquet in the hotel. Monday night I was invited to my very first "sleep-over" with the Lillard sisters, Roxie, Sasha and Callie. They are miniature Collies and quite a bit bigger than I am. Callie sleeps with Jennifer, and I got to snuggle in Jennifer's bed, too. I had a pretty decent time, I guess. I got to go to the Dog Park for the first time because my mom NEVER lets me go (she's afraid I'll catch something from the other pups), and I got some dinner, and some cuddles and scratchies.
The truth, if it be known, is something else entirely. I was abandoned....dumped. "Sleep over", my left paw. It was a complete LIE. My mother LEFT me all night long. Jennifer is my co-worker and she likes me and I like her but nobody said I was going to be sharing her bed with another dog for the whole night, and that my mom wasn't going to come rescue me. Jennifer drove me to work first on Tuesday morning, and then to my house after Mom got home. I'm so mad I could spit. I gave Mom the cold shoulder all day. I was a mess. My hair was all rumpled and sticking out, and I had hives on my belly and I slept all day. I won't get over this quickly, you know. Yorkies hold grudges and this one is a biggie. (PS - steak or In'N'Out might help a little - hint hint)
Finally about 5:00PM on Tuesday when me and Mom were napping, I gave my mom a gazillion kisses all over her face. She laughed and said "Oh, I'm so glad you're not mad at me any more!". Well, RATS! I had forgotten I was miffed so I rolled over and continued with the cold shoulder. For dinner I got chicken and kibble.
Wednesday afternoon things got better. We went to In'N'Out for lunch and I got TWO hamburger patties instead of my usual one. My practice sessions at laying guilt paid off. I need to work on "hinting", though. Having to wait for one whole day is unacceptable in my book.

We couldn't do it without you...
Safari met with an amazing vet, who has a lot of experience with unbelievably small dogs. He was extremely caring, considerate and, most importantly, very, very gentle with Safari herself. He actually became tearful when he opened her mouth to examine her "teeth." He said it was the worst thing he had ever seen in his thirty years of practice and wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen it for himself. The vet said he would not hesitate to move forward were Safari his own dog.
Her teeth are the first major hurdle and will most likely require a few surgeries to resolve the issues stemming from her mouth adequately. Due to Safari's small size, this vet is unwilling to draw blood from her, believing it will cause her to go into hypoglycemic shock. Additionally, her hydrocephalus makes her more susceptible to becoming agitated, further exacerbating the situation. This poor innocent creature cannot have her blood drawn, a routine medical procedure, so many of us and our pets rely on for their basic and specialized care.
Safari, YTNR and her foster mom would like to thank everyone for their generosity thus far. It has been overwhelming at the amount of love and support she has received. At the current time, contributions for Safari can be made in the form of donations for her medical care here: http://www.yorkierescue.co/specialsafari.html.
Because the vet won't have an idea of exactly what he is dealing with in Safari's mouth until after she is x-rayed, he is unable to give us even a ballpark figure for the cost of her surgery. Needless to say, it may be substantially more expensive than the initial quote we were given by the first vet that is currently reflected on the website.

Happy Ending Update on Pebbles
|
Hello YTNR, we are all doing great, we just love our very special yorkies. We have renamed Pebbles, Angel, she is such a joy, she goes to work with Paul most days at the park. She loves to swim, has her own pink life jacket, loves to ride in the basket on our bicycles, loves her toys. She loves to travel always interested n looking out.
Hope all is well with you. Our other two rescues, Nani n Manu Juno n Paul.

In Memory of Bella .....
|
Our precious yorkie Bella was born on October 2, 2004 she was the most playful, smart, sweet dog I have ever seen. 9 months ago we took Bella to a groomer who put a lead around her neck and caused a trachea collapse. Over the past few months the episodes progressed to the worst one ever on June 5, 2013 when she was taken to the vet to get her shots, on the ride to the vet she started having breathing problems, by the time of arrival at the vet she was put on oxygen, and given medication. After hours of her struggling to breath the decision was made by our family to put her to rest. Bella passed in my arms with our family telling her she was the best dog ever and we loved her with our whole hearts. This was a horrible death to watch, it will be my mission to educate people about not using neck leads on small dogs. Bella may never have had to die if that groomer would have used a harness. We were so uneducated about this issue. Thank you for letting me share our story, we are still trying to grasp what happened to this precious perfect little family member. Thank you,

Two Generations of YTNR Goodwill Ambassadors
Hello to our wonderful friends/Yorkie Family of YTNR!
Well, with apologies to MaryElizabeth, here I am, AGAIN, typing up my column in the last minute, late actually:( Thankfully, we have been so busy, and I am a multi-tasker, BUT I don't seem to do all the tasks that well! (Judy will tell you, that if you saw my desk, you would agree!-)
Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I pack the car, or get on a flight with my little furry friends, and I think this is like a dream come true! We are doing public events, where we can see our friends in the audience as well as the private parties and corporate events!
I thought I'd share with you what we did in June; Halo Pets and Ellen Degeneres ran a month long event, a fund raiser for shelters, in a Pop-Up Boutique, at the Roger Smith Hotel, in NYC... There was all kinds of activities, including vet advice, pet training, celebrities, and more, and they brought us in to do some doggie entertainment! The prez of halo, Steve Marton (not the comedian) took the word of the organizer, Nikky McDonell, that the pups of Team Jilli Dog could fill that bill of "doggie entertainment"... Long story short, he liked us, and brought us in to entertain at his select cocktail, of friends, corporate guests and family... We felt honored...
