Patti and Eva having tea

Here we are at McKenna's Tea House in Seal Beach yesterday for afternoon tea. We had scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam, little finger sandwiches and dessert. I had Earl Grey with a touch of lavender tea and Eva had Carmel tea. It was fun.
You would have loved it!

Summer, sun, fun and celebrations by Hannelie Vermeulen
Summer 2016 arrived in its full glory!  Temperatures are rising from coast to coast, and we are all engaging in our favorite activities.  Backyard barbecues, visits to the park, water sports, 4th of July get-togethers - often with our faithful companions by our side.

As it heats up - PLEASE be cautious, and consider the following:
  • Walk your dogs during the coolest time of the day.  Remember, if you cannot comfortably stand bare feet on the tar/cement for 5 seconds, NEITHER CAN THEY.
  • If outside, make sure your dogs have a shady spot and access to lots of cool water.  Be careful not to spray sunscreen and insect repellent on your animals, it can be dangerous, since they lick themselves.
  • NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOGS IN A WARM/HOT VEHICLE - it easily overheats, similar to an oven, even with a cracked window, or in the shade.  If it's 70 degrees outside, it could be 89 within 10 minutes, 99 within 20 minutes.  Dogs die in hot cars every summer, even when their body temperatures just rise a few degrees.  With their long hair and small bodies, Yorkies are especially at risk
If you find a dog in a parked vehicle on a hot day, check to see if the vehicle is unlocked.  If you are not able to remove the animal safely, have nearby stores page the owner. If unable to locate the owner in a timely manner, call 911.
Wait for the owner/officers to arrive.  If possible, EDUCATE, it goes much further than blaming.

Plan ahead for the 4th of July celebrations.
  • Exercise/walk your dogs early in the morning, before the heat and festivities start.
  • Keep them inside, and check all perimeters: room, doors, windows, yard, gates and fences.
  • If crate trained, consider the safety thereof, and blanket the crate (to cut down on noise and increase safety).
  • Distract your dogs with toys, feeder toys, meals or comfort them by drawing the curtains or pulling the blinds.  You could also add some music.
  • If your dog has a history of being fearful of loud noises, consider talking to your veterinarian about medication, to use a Thundershirt, a natural remedy (e.g. Rescue Remedy), or even just massage your dog and spend time with it.
Should you celebrate with a party at your own home, confine your animals to an area where they feel safe.  Do not feed them scraps from the barbeque (or allow others to do so). Clean up all debris afterwards, to include fireworks, citronella candles, matches/lighters, glow jewelry, alcohol, etc.  All these items and so many more, can be dangerous to their health - and lead to an emergency room visit!
Throughout the day/celebrations, check on your dogs and their comfort/anxiety level.  July 5th is the busiest shelter day of the year, due to lost, injured or deceased animals, who fled in fear.
PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES AS YOU ENJOY THIS SUMMER WITH THEM.  BE SAFE AND BE HAPPY!

ADOPT, FOSTER, DONATE                                             by Patti Kushnir

The shelter is a cold and lonely place for any dog to find themselves in.  Unfortunately, our canine friends do not have a choice.  They are either dumped there by their owners or found as a homeless stray.  Either way, it is a horrible predicament to be in.  I know, Marge Williams (YTNR Volunteer, has fostered over 60 dogs and counting) and I have driven many hours and miles with her to save these little doggies. We go as a team, I drive, she fosters.  We have waited in line a many shelters, filled out applications and finally we got our prize, a beautiful throw away little dog that no one wanted.  But guess what, we did and because we did, YTNR made a difference in one little dog's life.  They were saved.

We at YTNR would love to say there are no more shelters, therefore, no more homeless animals that need our help; we can close our doors and not worry anymore, not worry anymore about do we have enough money, not worry anymore about can we save this one.  However, this is not the reality.  The reality is that day after day we are working diligently to save these precious lives, to beg for donations to help us save and take care of the throw aways that others do not want.

The shelters are full, sometimes there is only a small window to save a homeless waif that is waiting for someone to come along, offer them a kind word, a loving pat on the head and ultimately to take them to a safe and secure place.

Our volunteers travel to distant shelters and see such sadness.  We rescued one such little Yorkie, Paddywak, an 11 year old who was unresponsive when he was handed over to us that we thought he was deaf.  In fact, he was shut down and very depressed and it took days to get him to even acknowledge you.  He was also very sick with severe dental issues and low protein.  Thanks to our wonderful volunteer, Marge, who is fostering him, he is a different dog then the one who was handed over to us on that day a few months ago.  Another one of our rescues Marvelous Max was from the same shelter as Paddywak.  Poor Max, his teeth were in such horrific condition that his tongue was rotting.  It took 4 surgeries and doses of antibiotic plus a loving foster for Max to gain his health.

MAX at the shelter

MAX's Freedom ride

MAX (MARVELOUS) at the VET

Max is one of our very successful stories; his new mommy flew in from Kentucky and rented a car to drive him to his forever home.  He will be her companion and she his.  Marvelous Max proves that indeed lives are worth saving.  I imagine that if you listened closely as they drove away, you would hear Max singing "If my friends could see me now".

So when you go into the pet stores or see ads for puppies, remember the ones who are waiting for YOU at the shelters. Rescues (YTNR) go to these shelters, on your behalf, save these little ones, get them the medical attention they need so they will be ready for their forever home with YOU.  Please ADOPT and if you cannot ADOPT please consider FOSTERING.  If you cannot do either, please DONATE to a rescue so they can save one life at a time.  It does make a difference; it makes a difference in that dog's life.

HELP US - HELP THEM.   We are their voice!

I would like to say that I, personally, am so proud of Marvelous Max.  Here is a picture of him before and after.

Team Illinois Raises funds for YTNR     by Jackie Wolfe

Here in Illinois we are a small group of volunteers who are committed not only to rescuing Yorkies but also to raising money to help all offset the expenses of our fosters around the country.  We have several ongoing events that we are doing on a regular basis that not only raise money but help us "showcase" our current fosters.  We have fun in the process and it gives us an opportunity to be together and swap "Yorkie stories".  Our biggest fundraiser occurs in the Spring and the Fall.  Twice a year we partner with our local Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company and sell booklets for their Community Days sale.  We spend 2 hours on six to eight Saturdays in the store with our foster dogs selling booklets for $5.00 each.  The entire $5.00 comes to our YTNR organization and we raise our largest amount of money from these 2 events each year.  We have done this event for at least six years now and many of the employees as well as some customers look for us eagerly to come and meet our sweet fosters.  Sweet little Pepper, one of our recent Smoky Award winners, met her new mom and dad at Carson's.  Renee and Jeff help sell booklets now and Pepper is the star of the show. In addition to Carson's we make blankets we sell and sell booklets at Macy's once a year for their Friends and Family sale.

Pictured are Dee Thompson, Jerry Wolfe, Pam Smith, Mary Lou Gorski, Marilyn Leary, Jackie Wolfe.
Not pictured volunteers who have helped with our fundraising events include: Denise Norman, Renee Beck, Jennifer Rosario, Suzanne Ditsler, Tracy Rootham, and Denise Foy.

Mary-Margaret O'Brien
Summer is here.  My most favorite time of year.  People and pups taking evening walks, and me waving "Hello!" as they pass my house.  This is me at my most favorite window.  It was absolutely made for just me.  Right height, right size.  And the plant in the basket makes a nice back rest for me.  I could just sit here all day, and I do on most of the weekends.  From early morning until the sun goes down, I'm either here at my window or practicing my napping skills in the family room.

Next Monday is Independence Day - the Fourth of July.  That's the day Mom takes me upstairs to our home office, sits me on her knee and we watch fireworks out the big window.  "Boom-boom", and then beautiful bursts of colored fire light up the sky.  Mom says "Oooooooooh, Pretty!" and I agree with her.  I'm safe in her arms and not scared at all.   A lot of pups don't like the noise, though, so this is a reminder to all  you Pup Parents to make sure your fur kids are safe and sound and that they know you will protect them.  So many run away from home, sometimes with tragic endings.  Share the beauty and excitement of traditional fireworks shows with your babies and they will be everly so grateful.

Hope you all are having a wonderful year and are enjoying your summer as much as I am.

Love you,

Mary-Margaret O'Brien

Happy Endings
Vivian has been adopted!

Trip home was great. She wanted out and lied next to Baby's bed. Now she's found the couch. Lyn was tickled that first thing she did was pee and poo on the pads . She's gotten a little barky with the Silky and we've seen some nips but nothing intends for contact and they mostly ignore each other but follow. Lyn is taking Vivian to work with her tomorrow. She's going to do great!

Tucker has been adopted!

I just wanted to let you know that we absolutely love Tucker!
He is such a good boy. He started crying a little on our way home, but I think it might have been because the ride was a bit long. We got stuck in a little traffic. After we got home we walked Tucker to the park that is near us. They have a fenced in area there for horseshoes but people use it as a dog play area mostly and there is rarely anyone there. I thought it would be a great place to play fetch with him, but once we got there I realized that there is quite a gap between the ground and the closure gate. So I changed my mind about that and we just walked him and played fetch in our hallway at home. You are right about him needing an actual fenced yard to run without worry. I'm really going to put the pressure on James to get that going here. After all that play Tucker took a long nap and Ethan waited for him to wake. Ethan said "I thought they said this dog was active?!?! He sleeps for a long time!" We laughed. Eventually he woke and played again before going to bed for the night. I fed him just like you said to, but at 4 am he did vomit. I got it cleaned up and took him potty. I think maybe it's just him adjusting? James thinks it's because at the park he kept wanting to eat the grass and sticks. I kept taking the sticks away because I didn't want him to eat that stuff or choke, but I'm sure he did eat a little grass. That could have made him sick maybe? Last thing, James and Logan aren't having any allergic reactions to him, but Ethan woke up with allergies acting up. Ethan has never been allergic to pet dander, but he does have seasonal allergies to pollen. I'm thinking maybe it's just Tucker bringing in pollen on him when he comes in from playing and potty. So I've started wiping him down with a damp towel with he comes in. I'm hoping that will help. I will look it up online and see how other people manage it. We will figure it out. Here are some cute pics for you though! Thank you so much for letting us have him. He is a doll baby!

Marvelous Max has been adopted!
Alisa flew from Lexington, KY to San Francisco today to adopt Marvelous Max.  She is driving back home, instead of flying, to spend some quality time with Max and see a lot of our country.
He is one lucky boy and we are thrilled to see him go to such a great home.

"BOARDING YOUR DOG

If it's not possible to bring your dog along on your vacation, you'll have to arrange for his care while you're away. One alternative is to have a reliable friend, family member, or neighbor come to your home several times a day to feed, water, exercise, and spend time with your dog. You could also hire a professional pet-sitter to perform these duties.
Another solution is to board your dog at a reputable kennel. Prices and services for kennels vary, but whether you choose your vet's office or a lavish "bed-and-biscuit" resort with complementary grooming and aromatherapy, keep these considerations in mind.
  • Trust your senses (as well as your common sense) when visiting a kennel as a possible "vacation" spot for your dog.
  • Make sure that the whole kennel, outdoor and indoor runs included, is clean and orderly.
  • Make sure there are no offensive odors. There should be adequate ventilation. A well-run kennel should not stink of doggy odors.
  • Make sure the temperature is adequate, not too warm and not too cold.
  • Ask to see the outdoor running area. It should be close to spotless and made of gravel or concrete.
  • Ask how frequently the areas are cleaned.
  • All responsible kennel owners and operators will ask you about your dog's vaccinations and will require proof of certain shots.
  • All responsible kennel owners and operators will show you each area in which the dogs are kept.
  • The outdoor runs -- and the whole kennel should be very secure. Many dogs will attempt to break out, so talk to the kennel owners about this if you're worried.
SOME LAST TIPS...
Bring along your dog's bed or favorite toys. When you leave, be positive and upbeat. Tell your dog "Here we are, Fido--it's your summer vacation. Good boy/girl!!" Do not apologize to your dog, he will sense your discomfort and become upset himself. Keep the goodbyes short and sweet. You may return and find that your dog enjoyed his "vacation" just as much as you did!"

Messages from our Happy readers

O, I am so happy for the furbies that found new homes. They all look so happy and content. Thanks to all involved with their little lives they have now reached the next reward that will forever make them feel so
happy, safe and content just like they did with the foster parent/s. They all deserve this. Know their foster Mommy or and Daddy will miss them but there will be one to take their places that will well deserve such love these
kind foster people give them. Thanks so much to all of you that have given of your time and love to all of them. Thanks also to those who have seen that there are donations to make certain all is done that can possibly be done for each and
everyone of them that have had such sad lives possibly prior to reaching our group's open arms to them. However, really, sometimes they come from people that gave them all but have reached the time in their lives they can no
longer see about them for one reason or another. This group we belong to is awesome when you think about it. All such kind, fantastic sweet people.

Anyhow, the newsletter is just full of such great news so I am going to go back and read all again. Still laughing at Neeko and joke. This one is real good one, ha!!! Helen.

Neeko's Joke ;o)

A boy was walking by a flag the day before the 4th of July and the boy asked it how it was doing, but the flag just waved. Then on the next day, it was the 4th of July and there was a flag on a float (it was really a man dressed as a flag) and it kept saying "Happy 4th of July!" and the boy said...
