REVIEWS OF THE BOOK

Parents:

Dr. Dorsey's explanations of having culturally diverse school counselors is supported with relevant data and scenario's that allows educators, counselors, parents, community participants, school boards and elected officials the opportunity to support children emotionally thereby potentially increasing learning in the classroom. Stacie Harris (Baltimore, Maryland)

Educators

Dr. Tekemia Dorsey hits the nail right on the head as it relates to issues as to why minorities are not excelling in the classroom. Her research proves that we in the field of education must care about the whole child and provide systems of care in order to allow students to focus on their education. This is a must read for every educator, visionary leader, and parent.

Rafael Frazier, B.A., M. Ed. Baltimore, Maryland)

Graduate Student (Education)

This book is an excellent educational source and a must read for teachers, parents, counselors, administrators, and students.  It provides true depth and insight on the importance of the partnerships that must be formed by these parties in order for children to be able to better cope with stress factors making way for more improved interpersonal and communication skills.  Shawn Chavis , M. S. (Bronx, NY)

Community Leaders

It was with absolute excitement that I embarked on reading Dr. Tekemia Dorsey's book in which she frames an understanding of the stressors middle school students encounter and the alternative purposes school counselors can play in the prevention of stressors that can have negative impacts on the success of middle school students.

Once I begin reading, I was hooked and finished the book in a matter of a few days.  Dr. Dorsey shares her knowledge and concern for the youth with passion and insight into the variables that contribute to the barriers which triggers different stressors at varying points.

I am grateful for Dr. Dorsey and her book, The Roles and Functions That School Counselors Play in Preventing and Remediating the Stressors of Middle School Students, for bringing attention to the impact school counselors can have on preventing and remediating stressors of middle school students.

SUMMER INSTITUTE

June - August, 2011

Statistics show that a significant number of youth and families have members of their family attend institutions of higher education due to finances, lack of knowledge, preparation, interests, improper planning,  skills, abilities, and resources.

We are providing an opportunities to combat these issues for youth and families. We are currently in a recession and money is not failing from trees today; therefore, we must use resources and gain the knowledge needed to move to the next level. Our Summer Institute is just one solution offered.

High School is not late to begin engaging students in the process of future planning yet it is late enough. High school students are overwhelmed uncertain and a gap exists for some, not all that their courses play a large part in the outcome. The classes and schedule students sign up for determines how successful and prepared the students will be on the next level or not.

Middle School is the time to engage students in their future plans because if you know it or not, students are tracked at the onset of middle school. How well they did or did not do in elementary school in their core subject areas, sets them on a path for college, the workforce or trade/technical schools.

Now students are continuing to evolve in self and their course work but if the light goes off too late in terms of change, a new course being set for them by the school system.

Students more engaged in their learning and understand, acknowledge, and own the potential of their future are less likely to dropout of school, have a higher sense of self confidence and self-esteem. The Summer Institute aims to increase the self confidence, self esteem, increase the connection between course work and future choices, build rapport between parents & child, and much much more.
