Q. I have a friend who says that at work she takes all of the lightweight filmy plastic and bundles it up inside one large plastic bag and then puts it in the recycling bin. She does this because it's hard to find bins at grocery stores that take this kind of plastic. Is this a good idea?
A. No, we do not accept plastic film in recycling. The film tangles in the equipment and is difficult to sort. There are also limited recycling markets for this low grade plastic, especially currently with low oil prices depressing plastic recycling markets. There are still some stores that take film back, but otherwise it needs to go in the trash. The one exception is commercial customers that have large amounts of clean shrink wrap and pallet wrap. This material is higher grade and we can take it in the recycling if the customer bags it in a clear bag.

The Choices We Make
Napa Valley CanDo seeks to inspire and facilitate action
by alerting interested Valley residents about opportunities for service. If you participate as a volunteer in an activity that you learned about through Napa Valley CanDo, whether initiated by CanDo or another organization, please take personal responsibility for your involvement. Use common sense. Only you can determine whether an activity is a good
fit, that is to say
compatible with your interests and abilities.
