Conserving land, preserving traditions
Photo of a Christmas tree farm by Emily Hague Christmas tree farm is a favorite with families

Nestled within the small town of Chesterfield is a local treasure: the Houghton Family Tree Farm. The land has played a large part in the lives of the Houghton family since 1947, with the Christmas tree farm starting in the 1980s. It has become a beloved destination for many people looking for the perfect Christmas tree.

A stress-less gift idea for the holidays

Bring the outdoors in this winter with a coloring book inspired by nature. Pages and pages of intricate designs -- animals, flowers, gardens, landscapes -- invite creativity and mindfulness. Pair it with a box of colored pencils, and you'll have a gift that's sure to be a hit. Bonus: support the local economy when you buy at an independent bookstore.

New fund gives grants to local farms

Did you know the Monadnock region is still suffering from drought conditions? Farmers have been especially hard hit. Time is of the essence to help, as farmers desperately need cash now to buy hay for the winter. In partnership with an anonymous donor, we have created a Farm Disaster Relief Fund that is ready to support local farms and farmers.

Birdwatchers look for their annual return

The first snowy owls of the season have been seen in New Hampshire. Looking for food, these majestic birds migrate south from the Arctic, then head back in April or early May. Keep an eye on New Hampshire Audubon's bird alerts   to track how many visit the state, or where to see one.

'Tis the season
Support local land conservation at year-end

Your donation this month provides lasting gifts of joy. It protects land where children can explore on snowshoes. It supports a farmer who depends on the land for her livelihood. It feeds the souls of our communities by providing scenic views and quiet places. Thank you for your generosity and for making all this happen.

It's time. My family and I will go pick the perfect Christmas tree. Whether from a tree farm like the Houghton's or from deep in the woods, a Christmas tree reminds me how lucky we are to be surrounded by open spaces.
I'm so grateful to live in a place where it's easy to make memories in beautiful places. I hope you and your loved ones will take time this month to make a new memory too.
Happy holidays,

Ryan Owens
