Dear EIF friend, supporter, scholar & partner,

W.E.B Dubois called it the talented tenth. During a time when individuals from minority groups were prevented from having the same rights as others, he believed that these races would inevitably be carried by the top 10%, those with the intrinsic abilities and skills to enhance and uplift their respective races.

Over 100 years later, this prevailing idea has seemingly crept into the hearts and minds of some people when it comes to the pursuit of a viable postsecondary career.

And I philosophically disagree.

Many organizations and individuals however believe just that. They spend an inordinate amount of time working with students that have shown exceptional academic promise, and have risen to the top of their respective class. These students should undoubtedly be applauded and should be presented every opportunity as they have earned that right.

But what about the rest of the students? What about the thousands of students locally, and millions of students nationally that will not graduate in the top 10% of their graduating class?

Do you believe these students deserve a chance to be successful. To learn more, visit our website:www.educationisfreedom.org

Sincerely,

Marcia Page

A Message from EIF Student
Alexis Lacy-Williams
Franklin D. Roosevelt High School

Poised, confident, and ambitious are only a few of the adjectives that describe Alexis Lacy-Williams. Alexis, a student at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School, is the ideal combination of academic excellence and social elegance. While being the runner up in the Miss Pearl of Dallas pageant, Alexis is also one of the top students at Roosevelt High School.

With these accomplishments, it should come as no surprise that she has made the decision to enroll in college.  She will be attending the University of Texas at San Antonio. Understanding that attending and paying for this would be a challenge, she quickly turned to Education is Freedom. Alexis said, "If it was not for EIF, I would not have been able to complete my FAFSA and get my financial aid. EIF has not only helped me complete my FAFSA, but has also supported me throughout my senior year to make my college decision, which was not an easy process." With Alexis' determination and academic prowess, she is undoubtedly one of America's future leaders.

United Negro College Fund - Empower Me Tour

EIF Assistant Director Kevin Malonson

Education is Freedom was proud to serve as the featured College Access Speaker for the 2013-2014 UNCF Empower Me Tour in 9 major cities across the country. We were able to reach thousands of students and hundreds of parents to spread information about the options and opportunities available via a college education. It is very empowering to work with UNCF to educate parents and students across the country. This is EIF's 3rd year to participate in the tour.
