Volunteer Spotlight
Gramatan Village volunteers make life easier for our members by connecting them to helpful servvices, social opportunties and educational programs.
This month we shine the spotlight on Gramatan Village Volunteer
Mary Anne Byrnes
"I started volunteering at GV because after taking care of my parents for many years, I realized that it is getting little things taken care of for the seniors that helps them continue to live at home comfortably. My mother's biggest challenge was the TV remote! I once put fresh batteries in it for her and she felt as though I had taken care of her world. When my Dad was no longer able to drive, I would take him grocery shopping. You would have loved the smile on his face when he was able to pick out his own bananas! Now I can help others thanks to Gramatan Village!"
Mary Anne helps GV member Betty organize her mail and pay her bills. Thanks to Mary Anne this "chore" is now a chance to connect with a friend.

in Boston has invited Villages around the country to participate "virtually" in an event featuring Dr. Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, author of the seminal book
Being Mortal

Dr. Gawande is a renowned surgeon, public health researcher and writer. His conversation, entitled
"Being Mortal's Villages: The Value of Community and Choice as we Grow Older,"
will be moderated by Robin Young, host of NPR's Here & Now, and feature a discussion on aging, living life with purpose, and how we can transform the possibilities for the later chapters in everyone's lives.
All are welcome to join us at this event. Reservations are required.

Gramatan Village engages community residents who want to remain in the home and neighborhood they love. We support aging-in-community with a network of volunteers, community partnerships and peer connections that enable members to stay independent, and fully engaged in the community.
