Campbell's Soups Well Yes! Commercial

TNG VFX is proud to share this Campbell's Soups Well Yes! commercial featuring our 3D scanning and photography of the vegetables (dozens were captured). Man vs. Machine (a design and motion studio) created the kaleidoscope effect. It was a fun challenge to capture extremely realistic assets. We prepared for it by picking up a different vegetable or fruit from the grocery store every morning to further the quality and technique. An especially hard challenge was the Kale leaf, which took a different technique to capture.

Photogrammetry Gallery

Photogrammetry is emerging as a go-to technique, using high resolution photography to build a highly accurate 3D model. Photogrammetry can be used for environments and subjects of all sizes.

3D Structured Light Scans & 3D Modeling

At TNG Visual Effects we use Artec hand-held scanners to do structured light scanning heads, bodies and props.

LiDAR 3D Scanning

LiDAR  is used for 3D scanning environments and large objects. Find out more about lidar scanning at TNGVFX.com.

3D Characters: QC for Photo  Realism

Do your 3D characters look photo realistic, or do they look like puppets?  Over the past ten years we've seen both on screen in films, games, and in television productions.

At TNG VFX we put our 3D characters through rigorous quality control measures before sending them out into the world, regardless
of how they were scanned:

structured light, photogrammetry , or laser. Today's market calls for technical excellence and photorealism for 3D scanning, cyber-hair, cyber-cloth, and skin shaders. Then it is up to the riggers and 3D animators to make the realistic model come alive and blend in with the live action.

Quality control is important, and 3D characters are becoming more and more prevalent. Make sure yours are getting the QC they deserve, to avoid the uncanny valley and to keep them from looking like puppets.

3D Scans Make Way for VR Realism

Virtual Reality launched last year in 2016 with The Oculus Rift and the HTC  Vive, which both require a powerful PC. The PSVR is the newest addition, and it runs off the PS4 console video game system. There's many questions to be asked to ensure this debut of Virtual Reality is not simply a gimmick or flash in the pan, and those questions do remain, but there's no denying that the current crop of VR has made a mark, and is here to stay for now.

Capcom released what many people are claiming to be the most impressive VR experience with Resident Evil 7:  Biohazard. The first slew of games on PSVR were highly experimental, and somewhat glorified demos, but experiences such as Batman VR and
Rigs: Mechanized Combat showed to us that high quality is actually possible in the VR headsets. We're in a bit of a catch 22 as we're waiting for better games to come out, but higher budget games require triple A studios to invest in this new technology, and what we've heard from the bigger studios is that they're waiting for a larger audience to emerge before dedicating more titles to VR experiences.

Resident Evil 7 is a visual delight. This was apparent when a demo for the game was released, and the amount of detail within the environment was so lush. In a game so detailed, to further convey realism, 3D scans are necessary for all of the human heads. Not only is the neutral expression head 3D scanned, but all the major expressions the character will experience are also 3D scanned to create realistic blend shapes that can be dialed in. The environment in which a significant piece of the game takes place is an a rickety old house (think Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

And the brilliance of 3D scanning is that you could designate a house in reality as your environment ingame - dress it up in real life, 3D scan it with a LIDAR laser scanner, and then have a three-dimensional layout of the house along with the objects inside it. The objects could be 3D modeled using the LIDAR reference, or each object could be individually 3D scanned for the highest detail. Stylization is important, but also what's important is having a fundamental base that is 100% accurate, and objectively factual, and that is what 3D scanning can provide.

LiDAR Scanning: Still Going Strong

In light of new and old technology moving forward such as photogrammetry and some structured light systems that can scan larger areas, lidar scanning is holding its own. It is a tried and true technology to get your data with the correct scale in reasonable time.

Lidar scanners are used in a number of industries including architecture, industrial plants (such as refineries), mapping, robotics and 3D scanning vehicles of all sorts.

Train

You can 3D scan both the inside and outside of buildings with lidar. You can also use the data in conjunction with other types of scanners if your large subject matter has some minute detail that you would like to highlight.

It is an ideal tool to have in your inventory for doing all type of projects when used in conjunction with the smaller scanners. Even more ideal is to have a number of lidar scanners to meet the needs of the situation.

Lidar is a necessary, strong tool for a complete, fully equipped 3D scanning vendor. For producers, its nice to have a vendor that can complete any type of 3D scanning, from small to very large, on any project.
