The blue hour is a magical time for cityscape photography. I captured this image just before dawn while leading the Digital Underground instructional photo tour last month. See this month's photo tip for how to enhance your blue-hour cityscapes.

April Update from Jason
US Marines War Memorial
I'm back from Washington, D.C., where Deborah Sandidge and I led a group of photographers through the nation's capital. We had a special private tour of the US Capitol, toured the Library of Congress and Supreme Court buildings, and spent time in some of the amazing Smithsonian museums. We also saw the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Of course, each day we set up for some awesome photographs, including many of the monuments at night.

This week, I'm off to Florida for a Space Coast Birding photo safari, where we'll be photographing birds at Viera wetlands, Merritt Island, and the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. There are a few spaces left to join me in Texas, Chicago, and Miami Beach this year!

Creative Techniques for the Traveling Photographer

Finding ways to stay creative while traveling can be a challenge. Oftentimes, we can't always be at the best spots at the best times, or we may be traveling with non-photographers. In this seminar, I present ways to find the best light regardless of your shooting conditions and approach travel photography with a creative eye.

Tip of the Month: Add a Magenta Filter for Twilight Shots
Arlington Memorial Bridge and Potomac River at twilight
Some of the best light can be found about 30 minutes before sunrise or after sunset, during the so-called "blue hour." At this time, the light tends to be uniform, and you'll get dramatic midnight blue skies. For a nice color effect, add a magenta tint to your images, either via a custom tint setting in your camera's white balance controls, or in post-processing.

In Lightroom, you can use the tint slider combined with a temperature setting of around 4000°K to create this effect, or add a color tint with the gradient or brush tools.
