Worcester to the Moon 

 

Inspired by Worcester's role in the Space Race, ARTSWorcester's Aurora Gallery, 660 Main Street, Worcester is hosting T-Minus: Worcester to the Moon, an exhibition of members' artwork now through June 1st. This is the fifth in an ongoing series of exhibits celebrating the area's industrial heritage. The exhibit is open and free to the public. A panel discussion on regional industries and their role in the moon landing, hosted by the Worcester Historical Museum, will take place at the Aurora Gallery on Saturday, April 21st from 2-3 p.m. An artist reception will follow from 3-5 p.m.
Baroque Brilliance

 

Get unplugged from your mobile devices and experience the exhilaration of a live performance that venerates faith and the renewal of life, celebrating triumph and resurrection through the brilliance of the Baroque period's leading composers, J.S. Bach and George Frideric Handel as the Salisbury Singers perform Baroque Brilliance on Saturday, April 21st at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester. Accompanied by the Bach Consort of Worcester, the evening will feature two magnificent masterpieces: Bach's Cantata 4, Christ lag in Todesbanden and Handel's Dettingen Te Deum. Mapping the Holy Russia

 

In conjunction with its current exhibition, Maps: Pathways to Russia, the Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, will host a symposium on Saturday, April 21st from 3-5 p.m. with renowned scholars Valerie Kivelson and Kelly O'Neil. Drawing on the visual imagery of icons and maps, this talk will examine the way that ideas about Orthodox Christianity percolated into the everyday world view of ordinary Russians. Comparing Russian-made maps with the Western maps featured in the exhibition, will offer a look at the different attitudes, interests and information that shaped the two very distinctive mapping traditions. Voices & Visions

The Sprinkler Factory Gallery, 38 Harlow Street, Worcester is pleased to host Voices & Visions: 4x4 - a collaborative of four poets and four visual artists who have discovered in each others work a way to create new work, using tools, media and voices that resonate, reflect and transform. Featuring the work of  

Lisa Barthelson, Susan Sedgwick, Clair Degutis, Dorothy Magadieu, Dan Lewis, Susan Roney-O'Brien, Carrie Crane, and Patricia Youngblood, the exhibition demonstrates artists and poets responding too and being inspired by each others work. In conjunction with this exhibit and in celebration of National Poetry Month, the Worcester County Poetry Association will hold a spring open reading in the gallery on Wednesday, April 18th 7- 9 p.m. The gallery is otherwise open Thursday evenings 5-7:30 p.m., Saturdays 1-5 p.m. and Sundays, noon - 4 p.m. A special closing reception will be held on Friday, April 27th from 6-8 p.m. Admission is FREE and open to the public. Cinderella, Cinderella

 

Music Worcester is thrilled to host from Russia, the internationally acclaimed Moscow Festival Ballet, for a performance of the delightful Cinderella at The Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge Street, Worcester, on Saturday, April 21st at 7:30 p.m. Complete with gorgeous sets and costumes, accompanied by music by Sergei Prokofiev, this timeless story is sure to delight everyone. The Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester, will host an Opening Reception for its dynamic new exhibit 30 x 30 @ 30: Your City, Your History on Thursday, April 26th from 5-8:30 p.m. The exhibition looks at thirty objects and events that have shaped the history of Worcester through the eyes of 30 somethings living and working in the City. Look at the history of Worcester in this unique context as people share their personal histories and contribute to our shared history as a community. Worcester Exposed

Did you know that Clyde Barrow of the famous Bonnie and Clyde duo worked in Worcester? Join the Worcester Historical Museum for its second in a series of Ghost Tours, exploring the fascinating stories of Worcester criminals. Tours start promptly at 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, April 27th, behind Worcester City Hall, 455 Main Street, Worcester. Echoes from the Past: Worcester Criminals will feature the tales of some of the city's bad boys and sometimes bad girls from Worcester's past, portrayed by costumed actors. Guides will lead you by lantern on a one-hour walking tour through downtown. You be the judge - your tour group will get a chance to decide what punishment these criminals will receive after hearing their stories. Light refreshments will be served behind City Hall at the conclusion of each tour. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today by calling 508 753-8278. Come celebrate the beauty of nature, the seasons and ecological ideals with the Earth & Spirit Singers who will host an Earth Day Open Sing on Tuesday, April 24th from 7-9 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church, 90 Main Street, Worcester. Admission is FREE.
Special Celebration at BMB

Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Road, Worcester, invites you to join them for a Special Celebration on Saturday, April 28th from 2-4 p.m. The celebration will recognize and thank Saint-Gobain for its generous donation and support of their new Solar Pavilion, as well as to cut the ribbon for the new Nature Play Area, now finished and ready for family fun! Special guests will include John Crowe, president and CEO of Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed Corporations, and Mayor Joseph Petty. Music will be provided by the South High Marching Band with refreshments provided by Worcester Technical High School Culinary Arts students. Admission is FREE and open to all.
Opera La Traviata

Verdi's immensely popular opera, La traviata, scandalized its audience when it was first performed and continues to do so today. La traviata (literally, the fallen woman) is the story of an affair between star-crossed lovers, Alfredo, a commoner, and Violetta, a terminally-ill courtesan proving that true love must triumph over all and that the highest virtue in a human being is a good heart. Voices of Asian Americans

The Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts is pleased to present a half-hour program on WCCA TV13, Voices of Asian Americans Worcester. Programs include informational topics such as health information, candidates forums, election results along with previews of the upcoming Asian Festival in June. Programming also include videos from SEACMA's Youth Effect program. New programs shown each Saturday with rebroadcasts on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays, Saturday and Sundays. Check it out!
Silent Auction & Wine Tasting

The Master Singers of Worcester invite you to enjoy a performance by their own community minstrels, the Master Singers to Go, and organ music while you bind on a wide variety of donated goods and services at their annual Silent Auction & Wine Tasting on Friday, May 4th from 7-10 p.m. at the Packachoag UCC Church, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn. Savory treats, fancy desserts and a selection of fine wines from around the world will also be provided. Admission $25.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo by destroying a castle... or at least pretend to! Higgins Armory Museum, 100 Barber Avenue, Worcester will host its 3rd Annual Trebuchet Contest on Saturday, May 5th from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Trebuchets are a type of medieval siege machine used to destroy castle walls. Using the principles of gravity and levers, they were capable of hurling large stones a great distance. Watch as teams compete for accuracy and coolness! Not one to sit on the sidelines? Put together your own team! Additional contest details available online.
