With or without snow, all kinds of activities will delight children and families of all ages. Popcorn and hot cider or cocoa will also be available.

Whatever the conditions, Tower Hill's Orangerie, Limonaia, and Winter Garden are always a delight, in addition to the beautiful woodland trails. Winter Carnival activities included with admission. WOO Card holders enjoy $2 off adult admission and swipe for WOO points. Public WOO Card

Pathways to Russia

As an icon offers the devout worshipper tangible evidence of the intangible heavenly world, an early map confirms the reality of a far-away land that lies outside the observer's sensory experience. The Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, invites you to experience a unique new exhibition Maps: Pathways to Russia, which opens to the public Tuesday, February 28th. The exhibit traces the West's discovery of Russia through a carefully selected sequence of original maps and views, printed in Europe during the 15th -18th centuries.

This special selection of 32 maps and artifacts, never before shown to the public, are from the distinguished private collection of Dr. Denis Khotimsky. An electronics engineer by training, Dr. Khotimsky was born in Moscow and has lived in the United States since 1992. An enthusiast of cartography since youth, he recalls when over 10 years ago on eBay he quite accidentally discovered his first antique map, the 1595 "Russia cum confinijs" by Gerhard Mercator. Maps: Pathways to Russia on exhibit through May 26th. Included with museum admission. WOO Card holders can swipe for WOO points. Public WOO Card

Tip of the hat

The Worcester Cultural Coalition offers its congratulations to Gordon Lankton, founder of the Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, who will be honored with the Cultural Enrichment Award at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette's 2011 Visions Community Awards next week, on February 28th at Mechanics Hall. Founded by Mr. Lankton in 2006, the museum's collection spans six centuries, including significant historic icons dating from the earliest periods of icon painting to the present. We offer our congratulations on this most prestigious and deserved honor!

We further offer our best wishes to John W. Trexler, executive director of Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, who will be retiring next month, following nearly 28 years as executive director of the Worcester County Horticultural Society which has owned and operated Tower Hill since 1986. During his tenure, Mr. Trexler completed four capital projects/campaigns totaling more than $30 million including the construction of more than 50,000 square feet of buildings, 30 acres of garden and four miles of trails, most recently having overseen the completion of the Limonaia and Winter Garden. We commend Mr. Trexler for his passionate dedication to the grand vision of the garden and wish him continued health and happiness in his retirement.
