The Worcester Ramble
Join the Worcester County Poetry Association for its annual Bloomsday celebration - Saturday, June 16th - the Worcester Ramble! The event involves community reading of James Joyce's Ulysses, as participants 'ramble' about Worcester reading from the famed novel at more than a half-dozen venues. Ramble kicks off at 8 a.m. at Bancroft Tower, Bancroft Tower Road, Worcester and concludes at 8 p.m. at Espress Yourself Cafe, 2 Richmond Avenue, following stops at the Worcester Public Library, Armsby Abbey, Grove Street cemetery, Jewish Healthcare Center and O'Connor's Restaurant. Admission is free, public participation most welcome! |

Freedom Song Freedom isn't free but Veterans Inc.'s Freedom Song Festival is! Don't miss this day long celebration to be held on Saturday, June 16th from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Veterans Inc. Independence Hall, 59 South Street, Shrewsbury. Vendor merchandise, food and Veterans Inc. merchandise will be available for purchase. Activities for children to include face painting, obstacle courses and much more. Admission is FREE and open to all. |
Music & Art Weekend
Old Sturbridge Village, 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, will come alive with the lost sounds and sights of 19th century popular music and art with more than 50 singers, dancers, musicians and artists as it celebrates Music & Art Weekend - Saturday and Sunday, June 16th & 17th. Singers will present solo a cappella vocal performances, 19th century songs and ballads, and a concert by the OSV Singers. Visitors can enjoy fife and drum music and a performance on the museum's antique pipe organ. Artists will demonstrate early 1800s-style sketching, silhouette cutting, watercolor and painting. Visitors can learn 19th century dances,paper marbling and how to play the jaw harp and tin whistle. Festivities will run 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. both days. WOO Card holders save $5 off adult daytime admission.  |
The Enchantment of Russian Painting
Eighteen works, from the private collection of Berlin, Germany art dealer and restorer, Thomas Mönius, augmented with eight Palekh icons from its own collection, will be showcased at the Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, in a homage to traditional Palekh-style iconography. The new exhibition Palekh Icons, The Enchantment of Russian Painting, opens Thursday, June 14, and runs through September 1st. Exhibition components from the Mönius collection include large and average-sized icons from the 18th and 19th century, some with unusual motifs. Examples of Palekh objects d'art, derivative of Palekh icons, are included in the exhibition. Museum admission just $7 adults, $5 for senior citizens, $2 for ages 3-17. Movies under
the stars Celebrate the first full day of summer with hunky Harrison Ford larger than life on historic Worcester Common, 455 Main Street, Worcester! Catch Raiders of the Lost Ark as the first of three featured presentations for Worcester Film Works 2012 Summer Movies on the Common Series, on Thursday, June 21st. Prescreening music and entertainment begins at 5 p.m. including food and beverage vendors. Film will begin at sunset. Admission is FREE! Grab a blanket, chairs and some friends! Subsequent showings will feature Jaws on Thursday, July 19th and Princess Bride on Thursday, August 16th. WOO Card holders get a free small popcorn.  |
Strike up the Band Fruitlands Museum, 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard, will once again welcome the Concord Band for summer sundown concerts on Thursday evening beginning Thursday, June 21st and running consecutive Thursdays through July 26th. Formed in 1959 as a marching band to participate in patriotic celebrations in the Town of Concord, the Concord Band has been a symphonic wind ensemble since 1970. The 65 members of the band represent more than 40 area towns and have played in the organization for an average of 14 years. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. for picnics, concerts begin at 7:15 p.m. Admission $15 per car load. |
Summer shows at ARTSWorcester
There'll be no summer slow down at ARTSWorcester! ARTSWorcester will host two summer exhibitions - Summer's Lease and Water's Edge - at its Aurora Gallery, 660 Main Street, Worcester from June 22nd through September 21st. Summer's Lease, an open-member exhibition, was inspired by life's ephemeral moments. Participating artists include Jacqueline Ross, Conrad Guertin, Dana Lane, Barbara Kahn, Sharon Free and Cesar Rodrigues showing works in multiple media, celebrating those fleeting experiences by capturing and suspending them in time.
Water's Edge, an exhibition of work by Lora Brueck, Nancy Engberg and Maxine McDonald, use photography and mixed media to capture the distinctive colors, textures and sensations experienced alongside the ocean. Themes of color, shape and mood reflect artists' interpretation and recollections of the always changing and everlasting nature of the sea.
An artist reception for both exhibitions will be held on Friday, June 22nd from 6-8 p.m. Admission is FREE and open to the public. Admission to both exhibitions likewise is FREE and open to the public during the duration of the summer exhibitions. WOO Card holders can swipe for WOO points.  |

Start your summer weekends off right with sensational music outdoors on the beautiful grounds of the EcoTarium, 222 Harrington Way, Worcester. It's Friday night so kick back, dance, picnic and explore! This summer the EcoTarium and WICN Public Radio present Live at Sunset - spectacular six-show series from Fridays, June 15th - July 27th (due to the holiday, there will be no concert on July 4th week).
Dan Gabel and the Abletones featuring Amanda Carr kicks things off this week, Friday, June 15th. Travel back in time with the 18-piece big band sounds that looks and sounds just like the 1930s and 40s! Then get ready for a heel-clicking night of fun when Roomful of Blues brings their award-winning combination of jump, swing, blues, R&B and soul to the museum on Friday, June 22nd. Lake Street Dive rounds out the month of June on Friday, June 29th - bringing its propulsive grooves, brilliant vocals and evocative song craft to Sundial Plaza. Concerts held outside so bring your own lawnchair - if threat of rain show is held in the tent pavilion. Emmancipation Celebration Each June, community members of all ages and backgrounds gather to celebrate African American culture and history and this year will be no exception as the Willis Center hosts its 15th Annual African American & Juneteenth Festival on Saturday, June 23rd from 1-8 p.m. at Institute Park, corner of Salisbury Street and Park Avenue, Worcester. This great family and community event celebrate African American history and culture and the oldest nationally recognized end of slavery with music, arts and crafts, food, dance and vendors from throughout the Worcester community. Headlining the 2012 performance line up will be The Stylistics Review, along with In Da Zone, In His Image, Sweet Smelling Savor, the Seven Hills Soldiers Stomp Team and many others! Admission to the festival is FREE and open to all. |

ARTS Rock! Are you ready to rock? The West Boylston Arts Foundation is as it kicks off its 2012 ARTS ROCK! Summer Concert series with Our Names Forever, opening for Draw The Line - the ONLY Steven Tyler endorsed Aerosmith tribute band, on Saturday, June 23rd from 7-10 p.m. at Goodale Park, Crescent Street, West Boylston. In the event of rain, concert will be held at the West Boylston Middle/High School auditorium. Free from under 12, $5 for students ages 13-21, $10 adults. Asian Festival 2012 The Southeast Asian Coalition will host its 9th Annual Asian Festival on Sunday, June 24th from noon to 6 p.m. at the Gene J. DeFeudis Italian American Cultural Center, 28 Mulberry Street, Worcester. 2012 promises to be the festival's biggest year ever - featuring music and performances representing more than a dozen countries, a fashion show showing each country's sense of style, an Asian Bazaar for exotic purchases and of course, a food court offering a delicious taste from the Asian region!
