Cary honored for public service
Kudos to Mass Audubon's Deb Cary who was recently awarded the Worcester Telegram & Gazette Visions Award for Outstanding Public Service at a ceremony held at Mechanics Hall last month. As director of Mass Audubon's Central Mass Sanctuaries, Deb oversees both Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester, Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary in Princeton, along with all of the unstaffed sanctuaries in central Massachusetts. In her 27-year career with Mass Audubon, she has worked tirelessly to preserve land, teach about wildlife and protect water quality. We congratulate her on this most deserved honor and applaud her boundless enthusiasm, her endless energy and her love of all things nature! |
Where was Russia?
In conjunction with its current exhibition Maps: Pathways to Russia, the Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, will host a lecture with curator Dr. Denis Khotimsky - Where was Russia in the 16th Century? on Thursday, March 22nd at 7 p.m. In this talk Dr. Khotimsky will explain the difficulties the modern observer faces when interpreting an old map of Russia and will offer tools that help overcome them. He will also speak about some legends, myths, and secrets of medieval Russian cartography that survive and flourish today. Admission $10, advanced reservation recommended. Life of a Campus
Clark University's Traina Center for the Arts, 92 Downing Street, Worcester invites you to celebrate the architectural history of the campus and its surrounding neighborhood in a new exhibit, Life of a Campus: Clark Buildings Then and Now. The exhibition, on display through April 13th features the scholarship and creative work of students in the art history, studio art, screen studies and music programs and includes archival documents and photographs, along with contemporary drawings, photographs, music and video interpretations of the campus architecture. Admission to the exhibition is FREE. Project supported in part by the Worcester Arts Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. |
Calling gals & gangsters
For one night only, take a trip into the gin soaked world of a 1920s speakeasy as the Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester, transforms its Fletcher Auditorium into Stoney's Speakeasy for a night of gangsters, flappers and jazz on Thursday, March 22nd from 6-8:30 p.m. Experience the excitement of the roaring twenties along with hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, organized crime, vivacious women and the music of Dan Burke! Period attire encouraged but not required. Attendees will receive their secret password to enter the speakeasy by bringing a canned good to help support the Worcester County Food Bank. Poetry night at the theatre
ARTSWorcester will host a poetry reading on the grand staircase at The Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge Street, Worcester on Wednesday, March 21st from 6- 8 p.m. The evening will begin with an open mic session followed by two featured poets - Kat O'Connor and 'Cowboy' Matt Hopewell. During intermission paintings by Kat O'Connor from the exhibition Water in the Desert will be view in the Salon Gallery. Admission to the event is FREE and open to the public. |
Exploration of Greek Music
All Saint Music Series will host the Capella Omnium Sanctorum and choristers from the St. Cecilia Choir of All Saints Church in collaboration with classicist Neel Smith for a program - An Exploration of Ancient Greek Music - on Sunday, March 25th at 5 p.m. at All Saints Church, 10 Irving Street, Worcester. While several extensive treatises on music theory have come down to us from the ancient Greek world, all of our manuscripts, inscriptions and papyri have preserved portions of only about 50 compositions written in ancient Greek musical notation, many so fragmentary that they consist of only a few notes. Admission is FREE and open to the public. |
