WPS Arts Festival 2012 

 

Spring has sprung and with it brings the arrival of the Worcester Public Schools Annual Arts Festival to the Worcester Public Library, 3 Salem Square, Worcester. Opening festivities are planned for Friday, May 4th in the Saxe Room and the Main Foyer, featuring free performances and art demonstrations from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Return for a Meet the Artists Gala on Tuesday, May 8th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The exhibit will feature over 700 two and three-dimensional pieces of art created by students in grades Kindergarten through high school. Exhibit on view during regular library hours through May 30th. Admission is FREE and open to the public.

The Worcester Arts Council will host its Annual Community Input Meeting on Thursday, May 3rd from 6-8 p.m. at the Worcester Hibernian Cultural Centre, 19 Temple Street, Worcester, to solicit feedback from the community to set priorities for funding in the coming year. In 2012, WAC granted just over $77,000 to some 43 artists and Worcester-based organizations. The Council accepts grant applications on an annual basis between mid-August and October 15th, with allocations made before the end of the calendar year. Grants are issued to support arts, humanities and interpretive sciences; visual artists, performing artists, science educators, historians and other humanists; as well as community, business and civic groups, social service organizations, schools, neighborhood centers, and youth, senior and family associations. Admission to the Community Input Meeting is FREE and open to the public.
2othcenturyartzipCantor shines with Sun Boxes & Infinity 

 

The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross, 1 College Street, Worcester, will present a temporary sound installation Sun Boxes by musician and artist Craig Colorusso in front of the Hogan Campus Center on Wednesday May 2nd and Thursday, May 3rd from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The exhibit is an interactive soundscape that visitors are able to enter and exit at will, and may immerse themselves by walking in and around the boxes, altering the way it is experienced. Sun Boxes was first created in 2009 for a residency "Off the Grid" at Goldwell Open Air Museum in Ryhiolite, Nevada, and has since appeared at dozens of locations including many colleges and universities across the country, as well as institutions such as the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
 
While on campus be sure to check out Infinity: Works from the 2012 Senior Concentration Seminar now on view in the Gallery, located in O'Kane Hall. The exhibition features works by Jennifer Bautista, Taylor Blackwell, Kate Cassidy, Marcy Kenney, Kelsey Long, Craig Martin, Rachel McMahon, and Moniqua Williams. Exhibition on view through May 25th. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
Jazz for a summer evening 

 

Join the All Saints Music Series for an evening of summer jazz featuring the Kallin Johnson Jazz Trio and special guest artists on Friday, May 4th from 7-9 p.m. at All Saints Church, 10 Irving Street, Worcester. Admission just $10. Reception to follow.
Master Singers on the go 

 

Enjoy a performance by the Master Singers To Go and organ music while you bid on a wide variety of donated goods and services at the Master Singers Silent Auction and Wine Tasting on Friday, May 4th from 7-10 p.m. at the Pakachoag UCC Church, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn,. Savory treats, fancy desserts and a selection of fine wines from around the world will also be provided. Admission is $25.
The Hills are Alive

 

The hills are alive - the Seven Hills Symphony that is! Don't miss their Spring Concert on Friday, May 4th from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Blais Pavilion in the Aaron Lazar Research Building at UMass Medical School, 364 Plantation Street, Worcester. Higgins Armory Museum, 100 Barber Avenue, Worcester, will host its 2nd Annual Trebuchet Contest on Saturday, May 5th from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Trebuchets are a type type of medieval siege machine used to destroy castle walls. Using the principles of gravity and levers, they were capable of hurling large stones a great distance. Watch as teams compete for accuracy and coolness. Not one to sit on the sidelines? Put together your own team! Admission to the contest is free with museum admission. AiR Time at WCC
  
Worcester Center for Crafts, 25 Sagamore Road, Worcester, will host an Opening Reception for its Artist In Residence Exhibition on Thursday, May 10th from 5:30-8 p.m. The exhibition AiR Time offers the opportunity for this year's eight Artists-in-residence to merge their diverse styles in an end-of year show. This year's artist-in-residence exhibition features the work of Peter Barbor, David Choi, Eric Cruze, Rose Esson-Dawson, Diane Chester-Demicco, Ian Gianlorenzo, Caitlin Vitalo, and Rachel Van Wagoner. Oral history workshop

Have you ever wondered how to conduct an oral history? Would you like to preserve the memories of relatives for a family history? Are you a teacher who is thinking about incorporating oral history into your classroom? Join the Worcester Women's History Project for an oral history community workshop on Wednesday, May 9th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Saxe Room of the Worcester Public Library, 3 Salem Square, Worcester.  Presenters will discuss many topics including proper preparation for an interview, required legal documents, recording devices, and transcription of the interview. Authors and Co-Chairs of WWOHP, Charlene L. Martin and Maureen Ryan Doyle will also offer a reading from their book, Voices of Worcester Women: 160 Years after the First National Womans Rights Convention. Admission to the workshop is FREE and open to the public.
Nature & the City

In conjunction with the yearly juried exhibition at the Goddard Homestead & Art Gallery, 1199 Main Street, Worcester, the Worcester County Poetry Association invites you to its 7th Annual Open Reading and viewing of visual artworks exhibiting as Nature and the City on Wednesday, May 9th from 6:30-8 p.m. Poets who attend are invited to share works of their own which reflect the theme or art from the show itself.
