Seven Key Qualities of an Effective Mentor
By: BY Jayson DeMers  Inc.com

Whether it was your boss at your first job, a professor during your college career, or a family friend, many people will find someone to act as his or her mentor. This person provides advice and helps navigate the trials and tribulations of starting a career. And now, it's your turn.

The desire to succeed can be overwhelming. It keeps people awake at night, drives them to arrive at the office early, and stay late on Fridays. However, there is one common, major problem that derails many entrepreneurs and professionals with high aspirations: dealing with new and challenging obstacles. Despite the most earnest effort and best intentions, most people need help when faced with such challenges.

Whether it was your boss at your first job, a professor during your college career, or a family friend, many people will find someone to act as his or her mentor. This person provides advice and helps navigate the trials and tribulations of starting a career.

And now, it's your turn.

But where do you start?

Mentoring often begins in an educational environment with a fellow student who is further along in the same program (a "peer advocate") or between an instructor and a student. Mentorships can also be community-based, part of a church group or other organization designed to offer professional advice and guidance to those who've expressed an interest. Equally effective may be a managerial/subordinate pairing in either the same or different departments. But, depending on the goals of the mentoring relationship, the mentor and mentee don't have to be in the same industry.

The 2-Minutes that Create Success

 By:  Geoffrey James  Inc.com

A simple method to train your mind to experience more happiness and success, at work and in life.

A while back, I posted "10 Questions That Make You Successful," which (based on the shares and comments) has helped a lot of people. Since posting that, I've refined those questions into a daily two-minute program that creates lasting happiness and success:

Step 1. Set yourself up for success each day

On a Post-it note, write the following resolutions:

  1. Today, I will express love to those I love.
  2. Today, I will do something to improve the world.
  3. Today, I will take action to become healthier.
  4. Today, I will review my plans for the future.
  5. Today, I will act with integrity in public and private.
  6. Today, I will be kind to others.
  7. Today, I will do something worthwhile.
  8. Today, I will help someone less fortunate.
  9. Today, I will be grateful for being alive.

Put that Post-it someplace where you'll see it every morning right after you rise from bed or (failing that) where you'll see it first thing when you get to work.
