Wet conditions not yet weighing into market
As many fields across the Corn Belt began looking more and more like swamps from excessive rains with planting season looming, focus has turned to crop acreage possibilities.
After presenting results from Allendale’s annual planted acres survey March 13 that showed a switch back to more corn acres, Rich Nelson, chief strategist, fielded questions relating acreage shift influences and marketing positions.

Harnessing water quality politically

One tenet behind agricultural sustainability is water quality, including some tools that use politics for momentum – the U.S. Clean Water Rule and the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Plan. There have been recent developments intended to improve long-term water quality. The ramifications of the Waters of the U.S. on Illinois farmers runs deep, which is why lawyer and lobbyist Lauren Lurkins of Illinois Farm Bureau’s Natural and Environmental Services follows it closely.

Survey finds return to more corn acres
Rich Nelson
Producers surveyed across 29 states indicated a move back to more corn planted acres after soybeans led the way last year. Allendale Inc. conducted the annual survey Feb. 25 to March 8 and included clients and non-clients through phone calls, the company’s website and other media. “We saw a record participation this year, and had a strong survey sample for the top 12 states that covers roughly 83 percent of U.S. acreage,” said Rich Nelson, Allendale chief strategist.
