Jewish Community Library, San Francisco

Published in 2016, the Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary, edited by Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath, contains more than four times as many words as the most recent English-Yiddish dictionary, published nearly fifty years ago. Where did all these words come from? How do you say cell phone, binge-watch, glove compartment, and many other words used in contemporary life? Schaechter-Viswanath will discuss her childhood growing up with mameloshn and how she became involved in seeking out existing Yiddish words, as well as coining new ones .

Tam program expands!

KlezCalifornia has been recruiting organizers and presenters for our program, Tam: Tastes of Yiddish Culture for Kids & Teens, in other parts of the U.S. and Canada. This month we introduce you to Elisheva Edelson, who has been doing classroom presentations in San Diego.

Elisheva, born in Mexico City, was a Jewish educator there and has continued for the last fifteen years in San Diego. A singer and teacher, she defines herself as "Educator as an Artist as an Educator." She has presented Tam lesson plans at San Diego Jewish Academy (day school) and at Congregation Ohr Hadash's religious school.

Check out (and download) our twenty-six lesson plans for grades K-12 in religious schools, Jewish day schools, and summer camps! Write us to be added to special Tam mailing list.
