A Sunny Celebration of Life
The day dawned bright for our sixth annual Celebration of Life picnic on July 9. And, boy, did we have fun. We enjoyed fresh picnic fare and delectable cookies donated from Praying Hands Bakery. From lawn games and chair massages to time with friends and family, laughed, played and made merry.

The Measure of a Young Man's Life
Dr. Ghosh recently said,
“We don’t measure our lives by how many years we live, but by the impact we have on others.”
He said these words to the parents of John (Jake) Dibel, when they came to thank us for our care. By Dr. Ghosh’s measure, Jake Dibel lived an abundant life, long in spirit and deep and wide in love.

You Could Be the Cure
A bone marrow or cord blood transplant can actually cure blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma. How good would it feel to save someone's life? To register as a potential donor - and possibly save someone's life - all you need is a simple cheek swab.

10-Day Salad Challenge
From our health coach Leesa Morrison:
This time of year in Iowa, you’ll see people eating more fruits and vegetables. Restaurants are offering their “limited-time-only” summer salads, farmer’s markets are abundant with locally grown fresh produce for purchase, and the elevated temperatures and humidity leave us craving lighter, cool cuisine. I’m sure you’re thinking it's a great time to jump on the healthy band wagon and add a rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables to your summer menu options. But how do you do this? Where do you find some healthy recipes?
Well, let me introduce you to our 10-day Salad Challenge. It’s simple!

All About the Music
Joni Tharp, our medical technologist, keeps pretty good company. This summer, she’s hung out in the same room as Paul McCartney and Keith Urban. Pretty soon, she’ll be sharing space with Bob Seger and Elton John. For the record, she’ll also be sharing space with thousands of others, who like Joni, are big music fans. Ask Joni how she spends her free time, and she’ll reel off a list of concerts that will make your head spin. From last spring through this fall, her concert schedule includes:
- Casting Crowns
- Jonny Lang
- Tim McGraw/Faith Hill
- Tom Petty
- Huey Lewis and the News
- Brit Floyd
- Paul McCartney
- Keith Urban
- The Wallflowers
- Pentatonix
- Alabama
- Little Big Town
- Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band
- Billy Ocean
- Elton John
Joni attends many of the events with her fiancé Michael, who shares her love of music. They come by this naturally, with Joni playing saxophone and oboe in high school and Michael playing trumpet. Now he plays guitar and serenades Joni every night. And Joni has a secret talent – she’s played the accordion since the age of four.
Her favorite bands? The Beatles, the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. She’s seen the Eagles in concert and plans to see Fleetwood Mac on tour next year. Joni and Michael also like to attend concerts featuring local bands in performance.
For a look at some of the other bands she loves, check out the photos of the quilts above. Each contains T-shirts from concerts Joni’s attended over the years. After this summer, she’ll surely have enough for one more!

Our receptionist Terri Hamilton writes:
My husband and I got a new miniature poodle puppy on July 26th. My son has a miniature poodle that we have babysat and fell in love with, and we decided we wanted one of our own. Once we knew we were getting her, I started looking up girl names. Penny seemed fitting as she is copper-colored.
Penny was two months old and weighed four pounds when we brought her home. She will grow up to be 15 pounds. Every day is a new adventure, and it is a joy to watch her. The first day, just being in the grass was a new experience, and she was too timid to step to the sidewalk. The second day, my husband told me she had gone up two stairs to the house. The first week, she was glued to me and constantly under foot.
Now, just two weeks later, she ventures off finding new things to get into. Her house training is going great considering how young and little she is. We put her in a crate while at work, and I go home on my lunch to let her out. She generally stays dry in the crate, but still has accidents in the house, so we take her out constantly.
And she has so much energy. Penny knows when I am getting ready for work, and she gets sad and lays her head on my feet. She really is just like having a baby—needing constant attention. When I get tired or frustrated with her, all I have to do is pick up the little bundle of fur and feel how small and see how cute she is, and I fall in love with her even more.
