Gifting that Gives Back
Giving is part of LaNette Faaborg’s DNA. It extends from her work as an oncology and hematology nurse all the way to her own start-up business.
LaNette is the founder and owner of BasketCase, which creates eco-friendly gift containers. The inspiration for her business hit while she was driving home after the holidays with a wicker gift basket by her side. LaNette loved the gift, but wished there were a less-expensive and recyclable alternative. That wish sparked a light-bulb moment.
Her vision led LaNette and her husband to design a foldable container made of corrugated cardboard to hold gifts for a bounty of occasions. It took a lot of trial and error, late nights and weekends to arrive at the right configuration. A custom packaging company in Des Moines helped perfect the design and manufactures the containers.
The gift baskets come in three styles, which can be personalized for any occasion with custom filling, stickers and wrapping. They’re perfect for every occasion – from holidays, birthdays and showers to congratulations, thinking-of-you, retirement and tailgating.

. And last month, LaNette was invited to be a vendor at the Hy-Vee General Merchandise Show. She and her husband promoted the idea of “Occasions by Hy-Vee,” which would utilize store products and position the grocery chain as a leader in recyclable gift containers.
