Native American Artifacts found in Bayou Goula
These tools belonged to the Bayogoula tribe that once inhabited the lands surrounding present day Bayou Goula.
The term "
Bayogoula"
is Choctaw or Mobilian Jargon for “bayou people.” The Bayogoulas lived about a quarter of a mile from the west bank of the Mississippi River, on a small stream that provided the domestic water supply
.
As early as 1699, Bayougoula and Mugulasha hunters greeted Iberville and his men near present day Biloxi and led them back to their village. It was from here that the explorers went on to discover Baton Rouge and then later New Orleans.
