The St. Matthew Baptist Church has served the town of Plaquemine, LA for 144 years. It was founded on October 10, 1874, on Myrtle Grove Plantation, by Bazile Dorsey and George Holmes, reverends of two other Baptist churches in the area. Rev. Matthew Dunlap was ordained as its first pastor.
Throughout the periods of slavery, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow, churches filled a basic social void as they acted as a buffer against a harsh, prejudice, and segregated society. Before the Civil Rights Era, in the South, churches were the only spaces where African Americans may express themselves in a position of power as well as provide an outlet for politics, arts, and sports.
In 1884, St. Matthew's was destroyed in a storm and was rebuilt in Turnerville, near its present site. However, levy construction in 1927 forced its relocation away from the river. Today it stands on the corner of Government and Warren Streets in Plaquemine.

Travel Channel visited Iberville Museum this month while filming a new show focused on fish, fishing, and fish monsters. We are looking forward to seeing our museum and the parish featured on their program!

Our curator, Meghan Sylvester, and Plaquemine Resident, Linda Johnson, will speak on the Civil Rights Movement and the role the town of Plaquemine played, in preparation of a new permanent exhibition on the same topic.
